TL;DR: I want to be able to interconnect a Character Article with Rank(s) and Profession(s) this character has.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently there is no specific field within a character article template to add the currently hold rank nor the current profssion(s). We do have similar functionality for Ethnicitie(s) and Organizations as well as related Prose. Making a connection there shows on both the character as well as the connected article. It is, of course, possible to add the normal mentions in the sidebar but this will not actually connect the character with the rank and professions - especially no (automatic) connection from rank/profession to the character This especially includes the display in the rank and profession articles where a list of "people with this rank" and "people of this profession" can be displayed.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This feature request would add an article selection field just like with ethnicitiy and organization. It would display the chosen profession(s) and rank(s) in the sidebar the same way.

The Team's Response

Has not reached number of users goal but due to how simple the implementation is, this is accepted. This was already implemented

I like this idea. Several of my characters have rank within their houses and organizations, as well as their professions. It would be fab to have this info referenced at the character level.

One can have the professions and ranks shown on the character with the respective fields on the profession/rank template. However it would be much simpler to make the connection on the character's page. Also: a character assigned to a profession is displayed as "Famous in the field". This is useful for... famous people, but the option to have an 'ordinary connection' for not so famous members would be quite nice.

I like this just for the sense of completion, but it has particular usecases in SFF and military fiction. In military SFF, understanding a character is dependent upon understanding the duties and responsibilities of their rank ; it's certainly true in my work, which is why I'm devoting so much time to Rank articles. I can also see particular usecase for homebrew campaign worlds and SFF in general with Professions. Again in my own case, if you don't understand what a Star-Pilot is and can do, you can't understand my protagonist. Yes, and yes!
