maps map-layers marker-groups markers embedding
A quick thank you to GeckoOBac for suggesting this very feature way back on the 17th of May, 2021. It didn't reach any voting threshold during its voting time and was therefore closed, even though the team's response was positive.. It's been a good while since then, so let's try again:

What functionality is missing?

Embedding maps within articles always shows the map with the default visibility settings.   Currently, when you embed maps, you can change the coordinates, centerpoint and zoom level that the preview shows when the page loads (as detailed in this article). However, you can't change which layers or marker groups are visible - if you have information locked in a specific layer/marker group, readers have to manually look for and enable the specific layer/marker group on their own.   While some information isn't necessarily important enough to turn on the "Initial Group Visibility" setting, that setting is necessary if you want that layer/marker group to show up in the embedded view. Currently, the only way to display information that isn't "Initially Visible" in embedded maps is to make a different variation of the same map.   If implemented, the author could change which layers or marker groups in the embedded map are visible upon loading the article without the need for redundant map-making or reader-user-input. Since these settings would be local overrides, they wouldn't affect the original map.

How would this feature be used?

People use the interactive maps feature and layers/marker groups for all sorts of content!   Given how well the marker groups lend themselves to organisation of information, the main use would be having the desired content visible immediately without making the reader fetch what's important themselves. Here are some examples:
  • A marker group consisting of mining sites on a map of a country may not warrant the "Initial Group Visibility" setting - the information is quite niche. But, when making an article that talks about the different mining locations within that country, the author would be able to embed the map with that marker group as "Initially Visible" for that specific article only.
  • If a city map has different layers that correspond to the different levels of the city, you could embed the same map multiple times within an article that talks about those levels, specifying which layer is visible for each instance.
  • When writing about the different political powers within a city/country, the author could embed a map multiple times with a dedicated marker group for each person/guild/political power's area of influence.
For different possible uses, you can refer back to the original suggestion made by GeckoOBac.

Follow up

There are links within the suggestion that don't show up very well - the Light Mode interface shows where they are the best, the Dark Grey interface only shows them if you hover over them and the Dark Blue doesn't clearly show them at all.
  • There is a link to the codex article about map formatting in "(as detailed in this article")
  • I linked back to the original suggestion twice - at the beginning of the suggestion ("It didn't reach any voting threshold...") and at the end ("...you can refer back to the original suggestion made by GeckoOBac.")
  • The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! This is a deceptively complicated feature to implement that we're not ready to address at this point. It could come in the far future, but no promises.   Regarding the link visibility issue in feature suggestions, we've taken note and we'll address it, thanks for pointing it out!
