Ability to link/embed maps with specific combinations of Marker Groups and Layers active

maps markers

Concept:

The idea is to be able to embed or link to a map in a way that activates a specific combination or layer and active marker groups. This would locally override the default visibility settings for Marker Groups and Layers.

Use cases

Chronology

By allowing specific views to be linked or embedded contextually, it's easier to make chronological maps that show changes in the political/human features of an area, over the relatively unchanging geological features.   Examples:
  1. Show the changing borders of an empire over its history by embedding the map with different markers active corresponding to the contextually relevant time period.
  2. Show the excursions of an adventuring party over their activity in the same area without required user interaction and avoiding a mess of overlapping routes/markers by activating only the important groups.

Separating contexts

In describing a large area of a world, it's inevitable that many different articles relating to history, organisations, locations and geographical features may all link to the same map and even refer to the same areas while having little to no relation with each other.   Examples:
  • Show the sites of religious importance of a culture, residing in the same general area of second culture that doesn't share its belief nor knowledge of the first culture's.
  • Show the markers relating to the economic trade routes and resources of an area, while being able to show features of magical relevance on the same map without interference or clutter.

Height levels

The ability to customise which layers and marker groups are showing means giving the power to separate the different height layers of a map and keep markers mostly to the layer they're relevant to.   Examples:
  • Integrating different height layers of a futuristic mega-city while both keeping most markers hidden when not relevant AND still benefit from map wide markers to signal points of transition between the layers and the ability to freely switch between layers without having dedicated maps.
  • Showing the various layers of a large tower embedded in an article about each of the floors without having to make separate maps to still retain the ability to freely switch between them when required.

The Team's Response

This suggestion has not reached any voting threshold during its voting time     This is a great suggestion but it doesn't seem to have the support of the community at this point. It is sad but it will require more support to be actioned. Maybe a better title / descritption can be beneficial to a future resubmissiso of the request   Feel free to re-suggest in some weeks.

As I intend to set many stories in one world, at different time periods but in the same geographic areas, this seems like it would be really useful!

This would be very useful. A usecase for me: I have a city with sewers underneath. These are shown as two layers in the same map, so that you can easily switch between them. But this has the downside that if I want to embed the sewer map into an article, I will always get the above ground map instead. This feature would fix that :)

This sounds like a very good idea. Showing chronological changes would be especially useful for me.

Great suggested feature. I could definitely make use of a feature like this.

I was just thinking of this! I really enjoy using map layers, but I still have to keep multiple copies of my world map because I want to be able to embed physical and political map views separately. Excellent use cases in the description as well!
