Königreich Eisenovian

Overview

Eisenovia, one of the world's Great Powers, presents a unique blend of monarchy, military influence, and religious fervor. While officially a monarchy with absolute power vested in the monarch and the complex feudal system underneath her, the true power dynamics have been shaped by the country's strong military tradition and the strategic maneuvering of Lord Marshal Titus Aruk. Over several centuries, the military has effectively held sway, with the monarch acting as a façade of legitimacy, creating a de facto military dictatorship.   Religion holds a significant role in Eisenovia, as the country is deeply rooted in its devotion to the patron goddess, Mavtes. The government actively supports the veneration of Mavtes, who represents time, order, and the seasons. Eisenovia emerged from the remnants of Kortes, a nation devastated by the Cataclysm. Many of the refugees blamed the Archons and Magisters of the old world, believing their reckless manipulation of potent magics caused the catastrophe. Consequently, the use of wizardry and warlockry is strictly prohibited within Eisenovia, while faith-based magics like clerics and paladins, as well as druidic practices, are highly respected. Sorcerers, who possess innate magical abilities derived from natural forces, are generally distrusted due to a belief that they have a tendency to exploit their powers for personal gain.

Political Structure

Within Eisenovia, power and politics are an interplay of four groups: The crown, the nobles, the military, and the church. Those with any real power are likely a part of multiple of these groups, if not themselves then by various members of their house.

The Crown

The monarch of Eisenovia holds the official title of the sovereign ruler and serves as the ultimate authority in the realm. As the embodiment of the state, the monarch symbolizes unity, stability, and continuity. Their official duties include the enactment of laws, the appointment and dismissal of high-ranking officials, the administration of justice, and the command of the armed forces. The monarch also plays a vital role in diplomacy, representing the nation in international affairs and negotiations.
However, the realities of power dynamics within Eisenovia often present a more nuanced picture. While the monarch officially holds absolute power, the influence and control exercised by the military and powerful nobles can significantly shape the monarch's actions and decisions. The strong military tradition of Eisenovia, combined with the maneuvering of influential figures, has historically shifted power away from the monarchy and towards the military leadership. Lord Marshal Titus Aruk, as the commander of the Eisenovian Royal Armed Forces, wields considerable influence and acts as a key power broker within the realm. The council that advises the monarch often functions as a veneer of legitimacy, while the military and powerful nobles exercise practical authority behind the scenes.
In this power dynamic, the monarch's ability to exercise true autonomy and make independent decisions may be limited by the interests and agendas of the military and influential nobles. The monarch must navigate these complex dynamics, balancing their own aspirations and vision for the realm with the need to maintain stability and appease the military and nobility to ensure their continued rule.

The Nobles

The nobility assumes vital roles as rulers and administrators of the land. They govern not only the vast territories under their control but also the cities, castles, and the people residing within their domains. As the ultimate authority figures, they hold the power to make decisions, enforce laws, and allocate resources. However, given the extensive size of their holdings, nobles often appoint officials to carry out these responsibilities on their behalf, ensuring effective governance across their territories. The social status of individuals in Eisenovia is heavily influenced by two primary factors: the level of nobility one belongs to and the prestige of their noble house. The hierarchy of nobility encompasses various ranks, such as dukes, counts, barons, and more, with each rank conferring different degrees of authority and privileges. Those hailing from higher ranks of nobility generally enjoy greater social standing, respect, and influence within the realm.
Furthermore, the prestige and reputation of one's noble house play a crucial role in determining social status. Noble houses with long histories, renowned ancestors, and notable achievements garner respect and admiration from both their peers and the general population. The fame and reputation of a noble house can extend beyond its current generation, with the ancestral legacy and family traditions adding to the prestige of its members. As a result, individuals from prestigious houses often wield significant influence and hold esteemed positions in society.

The Military

The Eisenovian Royal Armed Forces, commanded by Lord Marshal Titus Aruk and his three Grand Crusaders, hold significant authority and influence within the realm. While the Home Guard serves as the primary policing force in cities and on the roads, certain affluent nobles possess the means to establish their own private forces, which answer solely to them. In some cases, high-ranking military personnel surpass the authority of the officer in charge of the local guard, enabling them to exert their influence and shape the affairs of their territories. With their pervasive role in law enforcement, the military enjoys unparalleled control over arrests, criminal investigations, and the allocation of patrol resources. This level of control empowers them to determine the safety of various regions, ultimately impacting the fortunes of territories and their respective lords. Consequently, the military wields significant influence over the success or failure of a territory, establishing a direct link between their power and the prosperity of the nobility.
In Eisenovia, where a strong military tradition thrives, military rank holds immense significance in social standing. Serving in the military offers one of the swiftest paths to climb the social ladder, as individuals can rapidly elevate their status within society. High-ranking officers receive generous compensation and are presented with opportunities to ascend to nobility, further solidifying their influence and enhancing their social standing.
The confluence of a powerful military tradition, the ability to shape law enforcement and patrol strategies, and the potential for social ascent through military service make the Eisenovian Royal Armed Forces a formidable institution. Their influence extends beyond the realm of warfare, permeating into the intricate social fabric of Eisenovian society and cementing their status as key power brokers within the nation.

The Church

The state-sponsored Church of Mavtes in Eisenovia plays a significant role in the realm's religious and cultural landscape. Led by the College of Pontiffs, a council comprising seventeen priests, with the Pontifex Maximus serving as their leader, the Church wields considerable influence over matters of faith and spiritual guidance. The Pontiffs, chosen from among the priests based on their influence and standing, hold their positions for life unless excommunicated by a collective agreement of at least thirteen Pontiffs. Under the current leadership of Pontifex Maximus Deliere, who rose to power with the support of Lord Marshal Titus Aruk, the Church has taken a more radical direction. Alongside reinforcing anti-magic and anti-Stragesian teachings, Pontifex Maximus Deliere has preached the controversial notion that true devotion should be reserved solely for the goddess Mavtes. This teaching challenges the traditional practice of polytheism observed by many in Eisenovia and other regions, where individuals offer prayers and reverence to multiple deities based on their patronage and associated domains.   This shift in religious doctrine and emphasis on exclusive devotion to Mavtes has caused ripples within Eisenovian society. While some fervently embrace this new ideology, others find themselves torn between their loyalty to their patron deity, often tied to their country or profession, and the teachings espoused by the Church. The controversy surrounding this radical approach to faith has sparked debates and divisions among the populace, challenging long-held beliefs and practices.   Religion, therefore, intersects deeply with Eisenovian culture and values. The traditional practice of invoking different deities for specific aspects of life, such as seeking protection from Seltvas before a voyage or praying to other gods associated with particular endeavors, has been ingrained in the daily lives of the people. The notion of exclusive devotion to Mavtes challenges this multi-faceted approach to worship and raises questions about the role of other deities and their influence on different aspects of life.   As a result, Eisenovians find themselves grappling with conflicting beliefs, personal convictions, and societal expectations. The influence of Pontifex Maximus Deliere and the evolving doctrine of the Church of Mavtes have sparked a reevaluation of faith and a reconfiguration of religious practices, pushing individuals and communities to confront these complex theological and cultural shifts.   In the midst of these changes, the polytheistic nature of the faith in Eisenovia continues to exert its influence, with individuals navigating the tensions between exclusive devotion to Mavtes and the longstanding traditions of honoring other deities. The outcome of this religious transformation and its impact on Eisenovian culture and values remains an ongoing narrative, shaped by the interplay of religious leaders, societal attitudes, and individual beliefs.

Notable Laws and Policies

Mandatory Service

Upon reaching their age of majority, every citizen of Eisenovia is legally required to spend 20 years in service to the nation. This is most commonly done by serving in the military, though exceptions are made for apprentices of legally recognized druidic circles, knightly orders, or churches.

Serfdom

In Eisenovia, individuals facing extreme poverty and unable to provide for themselves and their families have the option to enter into serfdom contracts with their local lords. This arrangement offers a path out of impoverishment and debt by granting them a small plot of land and a means to sustain their livelihood. Under the terms of a serfdom contract, the individual agrees to work the lord's land for a specified period, typically ranging from 50 to 100 years.   In exchange for their labor, the serfs are provided with a plot of land sufficient for a modest house and cultivating crops to feed their family. The exact size of the land and the duration of the contract may vary depending on the circumstances and negotiations between the serf and the lord. While the lord retains all profits from the serf's labor, the serfs are exempt from local taxes for the duration of their serfdom.   This system allows serfs to secure a basic means of subsistence and alleviate the immediate burden of providing for their families. The land they receive provides them with a measure of self-sufficiency, as they can grow their own food and potentially generate additional income through small-scale agricultural activities. Over time, with careful cultivation and resource management, serfs may be able to improve their living conditions and economic standing.   While serfdom contracts offer a practical solution for individuals in dire circumstances, it is important to acknowledge the significant power imbalance between the lords and the serfs. Lords benefit from the labor and profits generated by the serfs, consolidating their wealth and influence. The serfs, on the other hand, are beholden to their lords and lack ownership over the fruits of their labor.   However, despite the limitations and potential exploitation inherent in the serfdom system, it remains a viable option for those desperate to escape poverty and secure a livelihood for their families. It represents a precarious balance between survival and subservience, offering a chance to work towards a better future, even if it comes at the cost of surrendering the majority of their earnings to the lord.

Legality of Magic

In Eisenovia, the legality of magic, particularly arcane magic, is a complex and controversial issue shaped by historical events and societal mistrust. Following the Cataclysm and the fall of Kortes, the country enacted strict laws to regulate and control the use of magic. While certain forms of magic, such as divine magic practiced by Paladins and Clerics, are generally accepted as positive and aligned with the nation's values, other types of magic, particularly arcane magic, face severe scrutiny and legal restrictions. The laws against magic in Eisenovia are officially categorized as "moral laws," intended to prevent the use of magic for corrupt and malevolent purposes. Any individual suspected of employing magic with ill intentions, such as manipulating souls, practicing blood magic, or dabbling in necromancy, faces harsh consequences including imprisonment or even death. This stringent approach is a direct response to the Cataclysm's devastating consequences, where dark magic and its misuse played a significant role.   However, the stringent punishment for even minor infractions and the societal mistrust of arcane magic users have created an unintended cycle. Individuals who commit minor magical offenses, such as unauthorized spells or minor enchantments, out of curiosity or necessity are pushed further into the underground. Faced with the prospect of severe punishment, some resort to greater crimes and forbidden practices to conceal their actions, further fueling the general mistrust and persecution of arcane magic users.   Even those who enter into neutral contracts with entities like the fey, often viewed as less malevolent, face suspicion and constant surveillance. They are placed on watchlists and interrogated whenever crimes involving magic occur near their place of residence. This pervasive atmosphere of mistrust and the stigmatization of magic users can perpetuate a vicious cycle, as individuals pushed to the fringes of society may feel compelled to delve deeper into forbidden practices, exacerbating the negative perception of arcane magic.   Meanwhile, magic derived from faith, such as the divine magic practiced by Paladins and Clerics, is generally regarded as good and aligning with Eisenovia's moral framework. This distinction reflects the nation's preference for magic that is associated with their religious beliefs and the potential for positive outcomes.   Overall, the legal landscape surrounding magic in Eisenovia is complex and contentious. While the laws were initially intended to protect the nation from the misuse of magic, their strict enforcement and the resulting cycle of mistrust have contributed to a climate where the persecution of arcane magic users and the perpetuation of criminal behavior are deeply intertwined.

Druidic Protection

Druids play a vital role in the agricultural practices of Eisenovia, making them indispensable to the kingdom's economy. With their deep understanding of nature and its cycles, druids ensure bountiful harvests and the fertility of the land. Through their rituals and blessings, they channel natural energies to promote growth, prevent blights, and mitigate adverse weather conditions. The success of the agricultural sector heavily relies on the expertise and guidance of druids, as they possess the knowledge to optimize crop yields and maintain ecological balance. Beyond their agricultural contributions, druids also wield significant political influence within Eisenovia. Their role as guardians of nature and intermediaries between the mortal realm and the spiritual world grants them a respected and revered status. The Crown recognizes their importance and seeks their counsel on matters relating to land management, resource conservation, and environmental policies. Druidic circles often have representatives who participate in decision-making processes and hold advisory positions in the royal court. Their influence extends to local communities as well, where they are consulted by lords and nobles on matters involving land use and natural resource management.   The legal protections afforded to druids highlight their significance and the reverence they command within Eisenovian society. Recognized druidic circles enjoy special status and are shielded by the law. Crimes committed against druids are met with severe punishment, reflecting the kingdom's commitment to upholding the sacred nature of their role. The strong legal protections serve as a deterrent against harm to druids and underscore the belief that their well-being is intricately connected to the prosperity and harmony of the land. This recognition of their importance further solidifies the influence and standing of druids within Eisenovia.

Role of Nobility

The nobility in Eisenovia holds a significant role within the kingdom's social and political structure. As administrators and leaders of their territories, the nobles are responsible for maintaining law and order, overseeing local affairs, and collecting taxes. Their position grants them certain privileges and benefits, such as land ownership, wealth, and influence. The hereditary nature of nobility ensures continuity and stability in governance, as power and responsibilities are passed down through generations. One of the advantages of the noble system is the preservation of order and stability. With noble families overseeing their territories, there is a sense of local governance and accountability. Nobles often possess knowledge and experience in managing their lands, allowing for efficient administration and decision-making. Furthermore, the nobility can provide leadership and protection to their subjects, ensuring a measure of stability and security within their domains.   However, the noble system is not without its flaws. The concentration of power and wealth within a select few can lead to disparities and inequities within society. Some nobles may exploit their positions for personal gain, disregarding the needs and well-being of their subjects. The hereditary nature of nobility can also lead to issues of competency, as not all members of noble families may possess the skills or qualifications necessary for effective governance. Additionally, the lack of accountability to the people can create a disconnect between the ruling class and the common populace, potentially fostering discontent and resentment.

Taxes

At the national level, fiscal policy is determined every ten years. During this process, each noble is assigned a specific annual tax payment to the Crown for the duration of the period. The amount of tax owed is calculated based on various factors, including the size of the noble's territory, the population residing within it, and the economic prosperity of the region. These factors are used to determine the noble's contribution to the overall needs of the kingdom. On the local and regional level, taxation is at the discretion of the individual lords. They possess the right to levy taxes on goods and services within their territories. The specific types of taxes imposed may vary, but examples could include land taxes, property taxes, trade tariffs, and tolls on roads or bridges. The Crown does not intervene in the methods chosen by the lords to raise the required tax revenue, as long as the agreed-upon sum is collected.   The Crown, however, holds the power to artificially raise or lower taxes on a noble house as a form of reward or punishment. This mechanism allows the Crown to incentivize loyalty or express disapproval. By adjusting the tax burden, the Crown can influence the economic standing and power dynamics within the nobility, reinforcing the hierarchical structure and maintaining control over the nobles.

Life in Eisenovia

Eisenovia is a country whose citizens are deeply rooted in their religious beliefs. The government-funded Church of Mavtes is central to the lives of most Eisenovians, and the teachings of the goddess of time, order, and seasons guide their daily lives. The church is led by a council of high-ranking clerics, who provide guidance to the monarch and the Lord Marshal on matters of faith and morality.   The country's strong military tradition is evident in the mandatory service period in the military. All Eisenovians are required to serve in the military for a minimum of twenty years, and this has had a significant impact on the country's culture and identity. The military is highly respected, and those who serve are often viewed as heroes. The skills and discipline learned during military service are highly valued in Eisenovian society, and many go on to hold positions of power in the country's government and industry.     The military's role in running the country is significant, and Lord Marshal Titus Aruk has been instrumental in consolidating its power. The council and monarch are relegated to figurehead status, with the Lord Marshal holding the real power. Aruk's ruthless manoeuvring and strategic alliances have allowed him to maintain his grip on power for several centuries, despite numerous attempts to overthrow him.     The country's aversion to magic is a reflection of its history and the catastrophic events that led to its formation. Eisenovians believe that the misuse of magic was responsible for the Cataclysm, and as a result, wizardry and warlockry are strictly prohibited. Those who wield faith-based magics such as clerics and paladins, as well as druidic magics, are highly regarded and often hold positions of influence in the church and government. Sorcerers, on the other hand, are viewed with suspicion, as their magic is granted by natural forces and can be unpredictable.     Despite the country's strict laws, there are those who practice forbidden magic in secret, and the government has a dedicated unit to root out and punish offenders. This has led to a level of paranoia and mistrust in the country, as citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.     In conclusion, Eisenovia's military traditions, mandatory service period, and religious beliefs have all played a significant role in shaping the country's culture and identity. The military's hold on power, combined with the strict prohibition of magic, has created a unique and often tense environment that has led to a level of distrust and paranoia among its citizens.

Foreign Relations

To the north, Eisenovia faces Haka, a slaver nation with which it shares a long history of conflict and enmity. While direct war between the two nations has not erupted in nearly two centuries, frequent border skirmishes and slave raids keep the animosity alive. The deep-seated antagonism between Eisenovia and Haka fuels the tense relations, making any significant trust or cooperation challenging to establish. In the southern direction lies the Border Realms, a neighboring region with which Eisenovia maintains cordial relations. The two nations engage in trade, fostering economic cooperation and mutual benefits. The Border Realms serve as a vital trading partner for Eisenovia, contributing to the economic stability and prosperity of both regions. This amicable relationship helps foster a sense of cooperation and understanding between Eisenovia and its southern neighbor.   Further south, the nation of Flamel stands, once a frequent adversary of Eisenovia. However, peace has prevailed between the two countries for five centuries, leading to a gradual shift in their relationship. While the older generations in Eisenovia still harbor grudges against Flamel, the younger generations are pushing for a more amicable and reconciliatory approach. The desire for improved relations suggests a growing inclination toward diplomacy and a willingness to overcome the historical conflicts that once marred their interactions.   Within the region of Goishutar, Eisenovia supports two influential clans: Clan Bakutan and Clan Nakatari. Clan Bakutan, renowned for their mastery of smithing magical weapons, enjoys Eisenovia's backing, recognizing their valuable contribution to the nation's military strength. On the other hand, Clan Nakatari, a mercantile clan situated along the coast, also receives Eisenovian support due to their significance in trade and commerce. However, Eisenovia's support of Clan Bakutan in a regional conflict between Clan Bakutan and Clan Atsushi has strained relations with the latter. Clan Atsushi holds animosity towards Eisenovia for their military intervention, creating a rift between the two entities.   Regarding the Aquin Trade Empire, Eisenovia maintains neutral relations. Although many Eisenovians may hold personal disliking towards the seafaring nation, pragmatism prevails, leading to continued trade engagements. Recognizing the practical benefits of trade, Eisenovia engages with the Aquin Trade Empire despite any personal reservations, highlighting their ability to prioritize practicality over personal sentiments.   Overall, the relationships of Eisenovia with its neighboring countries are a blend of historical grievances, economic cooperation, shifting attitudes, and pragmatic decision-making. Tensions, amicable interactions, and the pursuit of diplomatic alternatives shape Eisenovia's approach to its neighbors, reflecting a complex and dynamic regional landscape.
