Clans of Goishutar

The nation of Goishutar, home to some 6.4 million people, rests upon the Kailano Isles, a collection of islands rich in resources and diverse in landscapes. Within this nation, five main clans hold governance over the land, each with its distinct traditions and values. Despite their differences, there are common cultural beliefs that form the foundation of Goishutan society and establish strong connections between the clans. Goishutar is known for its general policy of isolationism, preferring to remain detached from global affairs. While foreigners are generally allowed within the nation, there exists an undercurrent of xenophobia that taints the behavior of many Goishutans, born out of a desire to protect their cultural heritage and maintain their way of life.

Clan Bakutan

Clan Bakutan, seated in the city of Raigoten on Aomi Island, stands as the most powerful and esteemed clan within the nation of Goishutar. With a rich history deeply rooted in the art of blacksmithing, they have earned a formidable reputation as master craftsmen and wielders of unparalleled skill. The city of Raigoten itself serves as a testament to their power, strategically perched atop a plateau with natural cliffs providing formidable defense. The power dynamics within Clan Bakutan reflect their focus on craftsmanship and the art of forging. Age and wealth play a significant role in determining one's status and influence within the clan. Respect for one's superiors is deeply ingrained, with disrespect being considered a grave insult. This hierarchical structure is mirrored in the physical layout of Raigoten, which consists of three concentric rings, each higher than the other.   The outer ring of the city houses the lower classes, foreign inhabitants, and businesses catering to the less affluent and outsiders. The middle ring, where the wealthier business owners and merchant class reside, is a bustling center of commerce, featuring sprawling markets, commercial areas, and parks. While foreigners are permitted in this area, certain establishments may reject them, and inns within the middle ring often refuse to accommodate foreign visitors. The inner ring, the most inaccessible to outsiders, houses the governing class, and the Chieftain's Palace, from which the clan's government is administered. Government officials, whose positions often have hereditary elements, reside in opulent homes within this exclusive enclave. Foreigners are prohibited from entering this area unless accompanied by an orc of high standing or when conducting official business with the government.   One notable group that finds its home within Clan Bakutan's domain is the Forge Priests of Bolkhan. These revered individuals are devoted to the worship of the god of earth and metals, Bolkhan, whom they venerate through the enchanting melodies of their hammer-song. Through their exceptional craftsmanship, the Forge Priests infuse their works of art with the divine power of their deity. They are renowned for their mastery of soulforging, a technique in which they imbue their creations with magical properties by pouring a part of their soul into the work. These master smiths, regarded as paragons of their craft, embody the spiritual connection between the orcs of Clan Bakutan and the god they revere.   Clan Bakutan maintains complex relations with both their fellow clans and foreign powers. While they command significant respect and influence within the nation, their position is not without challenges. Historically, they have fostered close ties with Clan Nakatari, primarily due to their shared interest in commerce and trade. However, tensions arose a century ago when Clan Atsushi, backed by the Stragesian Empire, launched an assault against Clan Bakutan and Nakatari. This conflict, triggered by Clan Atsushi's desire to regain dominance and eliminate foreign influences, resulted in a protracted war. Clan Bakutan, aided by their formidable blacksmithing and defensive prowess, managed to repel the siege of Raigoten with the help of an Eisenovian relief force.

Diplomacy

In terms of relations with foreign powers, Clan Bakutan has maintained a cautious stance. They have established trade ties with various nations, including Eisenovia, Quillshire, Achehgdo, and the Aquin Trade Empire. However, their relationship with Stragesia has been strained due to the latter's support of Clan Atsushi during the war.

Culture & Traditions

Cultural values within Clan Bakutan emphasize the importance of craftsmanship, tradition, and respect for authority. Blacksmithing is regarded as a sacred art, and the pursuit of excellence in forging is deeply ingrained in their society. They hold great reverence for their ancestors' legacy, valuing their craftsmanship and striving to uphold their heritage. Tradition is upheld not only in their work but also in their social structure, where age and wealth command respect and influence.   Three notable traditions within Clan Bakutan exemplify their cultural values:
  1. The Hammer Rite: This ancient ritual marks the passage of an apprentice blacksmith into the ranks of journeymen. It involves the initiate crafting their own hammer under the guidance of a master. The hammer symbolizes their commitment, skill, and dedication to the craft. Upon completion, the hammer is presented before the Forge Council, a gathering of esteemed blacksmiths, who examine and evaluate the craftsmanship. Successful completion of the Hammer Rite signifies the apprentice's readiness to join the ranks of the clan's master blacksmiths.
  2. The Sparks of Unity: Every year, during the summer solstice, Clan Bakutan holds a grand festival known as the Sparks of Unity. It is a celebration of their collective achievements and the unity of their clan. The festival showcases extraordinary displays of fire, light, and pyrotechnics, illuminating the night sky over Raigoten. It is a time when the entire clan, from the lowest laborers to the highest-ranking officials, comes together to revel in their shared identity and accomplishments.
  3. The Steel Caravan: Once every decade, Clan Bakutan organizes a grand procession known as the Steel Caravan. This monumental event involves the transport of their most exquisite and masterful creations, ranging from ornate weapons to intricate sculptures, across the nation. The caravan travels through each major city and town, allowing the people of Goishutar to witness and appreciate the craftsmanship of Clan Bakutan. It serves as a display of their artistic prowess, a testament to their cultural heritage, and a means to foster pride and unity among the orcs of Goishutar.

Clan Nakatari

Clan Nakatari stands as a prominent force within the nation of Goishutar, based in the bustling city of Etsumi on the Island of Na’wen. Renowned for their rich and colorful attire, this mercantile clan has a history deeply intertwined with trade and commerce. However, Clan Nakatari differentiates itself from the other clans through its relatively inclusive and welcoming nature, a trait inherited from its humble origins as a clan of fishermen. Etsumi, the jewel of Clan Nakatari's domain, serves as a testament to their transformation from simple fishermen to expert shipwrights and traders. In the past, before the arrival of foreign powers such as Eisenovia, Stragesia, and Flamel, Clan Nakatari thrived on the abundant seafood of the region, which became a staple in their traditional cuisine. But with the influx of foreign influences, the clan experienced a significant shift in their development. The arrival of foreigners and the subsequent trade opportunities brought rapid growth and an influx of wealth to Etsumi, transforming the small fishing village into a bustling city that became a melting pot of various traditions and peoples.   Within the internal power dynamics of Clan Nakatari, a complex web of influence and authority exists. While the clan's overall structure remains hierarchical, there are distinct elements that contribute to its functioning. Though the Clan is headed by a Chieftan, he serves as the head of a council of elders, comprised of seasoned and respected individuals, which plays a pivotal role in decision-making processes and ensuring the clan's continuity. Wealth and business acumen also wield considerable influence within the clan, with successful merchants and shipwrights holding significant sway over the direction of Clan Nakatari's economic endeavors.

Diplomacy

Clan Nakatari's reputation as skilled shipwrights and traders has paved the way for healthy trade relations with various nations, both within and beyond the Kailano Isles. They engage in prosperous exchanges with the likes of the Königreich Eisenovian, the Republic of Quillshire, the Isles of Achehgdo, and the Aquin Trade Empire. The clan once had trade relations with the now-fallen Royaume de Flamel, but the intrusion of devilish forces severed their ties. Additionally, a century-old war against Clan Atsushi, backed by Stragesia, resulted in Stragesian ships being barred from entering Etsumi's port. Nonetheless, the current debate surrounding the reopening of ports to Stragesian civilian ships highlights the dynamic nature of Clan Nakatari's foreign relations.

Culture & Traditions

Cultural values permeate every aspect of Clan Nakatari's society. While they have embraced foreign influences, elements of their traditional culture persist, reinforcing their unique identity. Strong familial bonds and communal support are highly valued, with the clan members extending their solidarity beyond blood ties. Mutual cooperation and assistance in times of need form the bedrock of Clan Nakatari's social fabric.   Furthermore, Clan Nakatari places great importance on hospitality, understanding the potential for fruitful relationships that can be cultivated through the exchange of ideas and traditions. Welcoming foreigners into their midst is seen as an opportunity for cultural enrichment and economic growth, although a lingering undercurrent of xenophobia exists within the clan, driven by a desire to safeguard their cultural heritage and protect their way of life from external influences.   Traditions hold significant importance within Clan Nakatari, serving as a bridge between the past and the present. Two noteworthy traditions that have endured through generations are the Festival of Tides and the Song of the Sea.
  1. The Festival of Tides: An annual celebration held in Etsumi, paying homage to the sea that has provided sustenance and livelihood to the clan for centuries. Elaborate processions, vibrant parades, and lively performances characterize this festive occasion, with locals and foreigners alike coming together to partake in the revelry. The Festival of Tides showcases the rich cultural heritage of Clan Nakatari, with traditional dances, music, and sumptuous feasts that honor the deep connection the clan shares with the bountiful ocean.
  2. The Song of the Sea: An ancient oral tradition passed down through generations. Through melodious chants and intricate poetry, this tradition recounts the heroic tales of Clan Nakatari's seafaring ancestors. The songs evoke a sense of adventure, resilience, and reverence for the sea, inspiring the younger generations to embrace their heritage and carry forward the legacy of their forebears. The Song of the Sea serves as a reminder of Clan Nakatari's roots and their enduring bond with the maritime realm.
  3. The Ritual of Prosperous Voyages: Before setting sail on important trade expeditions or when launching a newly constructed ship, Clan Nakatari holds the Ritual of Prosperous Voyages. This sacred ceremony involves the presence of Nakatari shipwrights, merchants, and seafarers gathered around the vessel to offer prayers and blessings for safe journeys and successful trading endeavors. The clan's spiritual leaders lead the rituals, invoking the protection of the sea gods and goddesses, while artisans create intricate talismans and amulets believed to bring good luck and fortune. The ritual is a solemn and revered tradition that instills confidence in the crew and ensures the ship's auspicious beginnings.

Clan Atsushi

Clan Atsushi, once the most powerful and dominant clan within the nation of Goishutar, has experienced a dramatic decline in recent decades. Renowned for their prowess in warfare and their warrior heritage, Clan Atsushi stood as a formidable force and a symbol of martial strength. However, the tides of history and the intervention of foreign powers have led to their downfall. The structure of Clan Atsushi was rooted in a militaristic hierarchy, with every adult holding a military rank equivalent to their position in society, whether they be directly involved in the military or merely in a position that supports it. As children have not yet gone through their right of passage they do not have a rank and thus their social status is based on the ranks of their parents.   For centuries, Clan Atsushi enjoyed a position of unrivaled power and influence within Goishutar. Their military might and strategic prowess allowed them to assert their dominance over rival clans, establishing a hegemony that shaped the nation's landscape. Their martial traditions, discipline, and commitment to the art of war became the bedrock of their cultural values. However, the rise of foreign powers and their encroachment into Goishutar precipitated a series of events that led to Clan Atsushi's downfall. They primarily blamed the Eisenovian Empire and the Aquin Trade Empire for their waning power, perceiving their influence as a threat to their autonomy and traditional way of life.   In their bid to reclaim their dominant status and eradicate foreign influences, Clan Atsushi initiated a large-scale conflict with the support of the Stragesian Empire, their neighbor and rival of Eisenovia. This war, waged against the allied forces of Clans Nakatari and Bakutan, aimed to push back foreign powers and restore Clan Atsushi's supremacy.   Initially, Clan Atsushi displayed considerable strength, managing to advance deep into Bakutan territory and successfully laying siege to the city of Raigoten. However, their fortunes changed when an Eisenovian relief force arrived, breaking the siege and forcing Clan Atsushi to retreat. With their supply lines overstretched and a long and arduous march back through hostile territories, many Atsushi warriors perished, leaving their once-mighty army weakened and demoralized.   The war eventually concluded with Clan Atsushi's defeat, marking a turning point in their history. The loss shattered their position of power and shattered their dreams of restoring their dominance. Since then, Clan Atsushi has simmered in a state of resentment, bitterness, and a desire for vengeance against those they perceive as responsible for their downfall.   The power dynamics within Clan Atsushi have since shifted, with their influence diminishing and their once-fearsome military now depleted. However, they have spent the ensuing centuries rebuilding their strength, preparing for the day when they can exact their revenge and reclaim their lost power. Their focus has shifted toward regaining their martial might and restoring their warrior heritage, all while harboring a deep-seated resentment toward foreign powers and those who aligned with them.

Diplomacy

Relations with other clans remain strained, particularly with Clans Nakatari and Bakutan, who were the primary beneficiaries of Clan Atsushi's defeat. Clan Atsushi largely perceives them as rivals and obstacles to their resurgence, fueling a sense of enmity and desire for retribution. They harbor a deep distrust of foreign powers and remain highly suspicious of any external influence, viewing it as a threat to their cultural values and traditions. However, their new First Warlord seems intent on changing this state, and building an alliance based on shared values with other clans to push out foreign influence.   Clan Atsushi maintains a strained relationship with foreign powers, particularly with Eisenovia and the Aquin Trade Empire, whom they blame for their past decline in power. They harbor a deep-seated resentment towards these nations and remain cautious and distrustful of any foreign influence or involvement in their affairs. They have however forged an alliance with the Stragesian Empire, their neighboring rival of Eisenovia, during their war against the Clans Nakatari and Bakutan, solidifying a bond that remains influential in their pursuit to regain their former dominance.

Culture & Traditions

Cultural values within Clan Atsushi center around the ideals of strength, honor, and martial prowess. They uphold a code of conduct that emphasizes disciplined warfare, loyalty to the clan, and the protection of their people. Respect for authority and adherence to hierarchical structures are deeply ingrained within their society, reflecting their militaristic origins.   Despite their diminished stature, Clan Atsushi has managed to preserve several traditions that highlight their cultural values:
  1. The Rite of Vigilance: This ritual is performed by young warriors upon reaching maturity and signifies their transition into adulthood. The participants undergo rigorous physical and mental training, culminating in a night-long vigil during which they meditate and reflect on their responsibilities as defenders of the clan. This rite instills a deep sense of duty, honor, and vigilance in the warriors, binding them to their role as protectors of their people.
  2. The Battle Hymns: Clan Atsushi places great importance on the oral tradition of battle hymns. These powerful and evocative songs recount the heroic deeds of their ancestors, glorifying their victories and preserving their martial legacy. The battle hymns are sung during ceremonies and gatherings, serving as a source of inspiration and a reminder of their warrior heritage.
  3. The Feast of Remembrance: Annually, Clan Atsushi gathers for the Feast of Remembrance, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring their fallen warriors. During the feast, the names and stories of those who have perished in battle are recited, accompanied by moments of silence and solemn reflection. The event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by previous generations and reinforces the clan's commitment to their martial traditions.

Clan Shimada

Clan Shimada, a steadfast and self-reliant farmer clan, plays a crucial role in the nation of Goishutar. Nestled amidst fertile lands and verdant fields, Clan Shimada is known for their agricultural expertise and strong sense of community. With a distinctive social structure, rich history, and unique traditions, Clan Shimada's contributions to the nation extend far beyond the boundaries of their farms. The structure of Clan Shimada is defined by a three-tiered caste system, which forms the foundation of their social order. At the bottom of the hierarchy lies the laborer caste, which constitutes the majority of the population within the clan. These hardworking individuals toil in the fields, tending to crops and livestock, ensuring the sustenance and prosperity of the clan. Above them resides the administrative caste, responsible for governmental positions and officerial roles within the military. Finally, at the pinnacle of the hierarchy, stands the noble warrior caste. Comprised of professional soldiers, these individuals protect the people and are owed loyalty in return.   Throughout their history, Clan Shimada has fostered a deep distrust of outsiders, a sentiment rooted in their determination to protect their lands and resources from potential threats. While initially wary of foreigners, Clan Shimada displays a welcoming nature once individuals have earned their trust. Their initial reluctance to embrace outsiders stems from their insular lifestyle, as they rely heavily on self-sufficiency and view external influences as potential disruptors of their traditional way of life.   Power dynamics within Clan Shimada are deeply entrenched in their traditional caste system, which grants the higher castes significant influence and authority. The laborer caste, while considered the backbone of the clan, respects the hierarchical structure and expects the higher castes to act in their best interests. The laborers place a great deal of trust in the administrative and noble warrior castes, believing that they possess the knowledge and wisdom to make decisions that benefit the entire clan.   However, the laborer caste also holds the power to exercise influence when the higher castes repeatedly fail to act in their best interests. In instances where the administrative and noble warrior castes prove incompetent or neglectful, the laborers have the ability to mobilize and bring about change within the clan. They can organize and rally support to overthrow the upper castes, replacing them with new families who will better represent their interests while maintaining the structure of the caste system.

Diplomacy

Clan Shimada maintains cordial relations with other clans within Goishutar, fostering mutual respect and cooperation. Their role as providers of food and sustenance for the nation endears them to other clans, who rely on their agricultural expertise. While Clan Shimada may appear aloof or distant due to their initial reservations, they forge strong bonds once trust has been established.   In terms of foreign powers, Clan Shimada has historically maintained a cautious approach. Their isolationist tendencies and emphasis on self-reliance have led them to avoid extensive engagement with foreign nations. They prioritize the protection of their lands and resources, wary of potential exploitation or interference. However, they do engage in limited trade with neighboring nations, exchanging surplus agricultural goods for essential supplies.

Culture & Traditions

Cultural values within Clan Shimada revolve around the principles of hard work, communal harmony, and respect for the land. They hold a deep reverence for nature and view themselves as custodians of the earth. This connection with the natural world informs their agricultural practices, emphasizing sustainability and a harmonious relationship with the environment.   Three notable traditions within Clan Shimada further exemplify their cultural values:
  1. Harvest Festival: Each year, Clan Shimada organizes a grand Harvest Festival to celebrate the bountiful crops and the collective efforts of the clan. The festival is marked by joyful gatherings, feasts, and performances, showcasing their vibrant cultural heritage. It is a time of gratitude and unity, as the entire clan comes together to share in the abundance of the harvest.
  2. Ritual of Land Blessing: Before each planting season, Clan Shimada conducts a solemn ritual to bless the land and seek the favor of the gods. The ceremony involves prayers, offerings, and the participation of the entire community. It is believed that this ritual ensures a fruitful and prosperous harvest, invoking the blessings of the earth and the divine spirits that govern nature.
  3. Communal Harvest: Clan Shimada places great importance on collective labor and communal support. During critical farming periods, such as the planting and harvesting seasons, the entire clan works together in a spirit of cooperation. This tradition fosters a sense of unity, as individuals come together to accomplish shared goals and support one another in their agricultural endeavors.

Clan Tatsuya

Clan Tatsuya, shrouded in mystery and seclusion, holds a prominent position within the nation of Goishutar. Nestled high in the misty mountains, they are known for their enigmatic practices and staunch isolationism. With a unique social structure, captivating history, and deep-rooted cultural values, Clan Tatsuya remains an enigma to outsiders, leaving much to speculation and curiosity. The structure of Clan Tatsuya is characterized by a hierarchical system, rooted in their traditional beliefs and customs. At the pinnacle of the hierarchy stands the Enlightened One, the clan's spiritual leader, who is believed to possess great wisdom and mystical powers. Beneath the Enlightened One are the Council of Venerable Sages, respected individuals chosen for their knowledge and experience. The council aids in decision-making and advises the Enlightened One on matters concerning the clan.   The history of Clan Tatsuya is largely veiled in secrecy, known only to its members and shared sparingly with the outside world. Their isolationist tendencies have allowed them to preserve their ancient customs and rituals, shielding them from the influence of external forces. Legends and tales speak of their existence predating the formation of the nation itself, hinting at a profound connection to the mystical and the divine.   Power dynamics within Clan Tatsuya revolve around the authority and wisdom of the Enlightened One and the Council of Venerable Sages. The clan places great trust in their spiritual leader, believing that they possess an intimate understanding of the mystical forces that shape their existence. Decisions regarding the clan's internal affairs, relations with other clans, and matters of great importance are entrusted to the wisdom of the Enlightened One and the council.

Diplomacy

Relations with other clans in Goishutar are characterized by the clan's inherent isolationism. Clan Tatsuya maintains a certain distance from the affairs and dealings of the other clans, preferring to exist in harmony with the natural world and the mystical energies that permeate their mountainous abode. While their seclusion may lead to curiosity and occasional speculation among the other clans, there is a general understanding and respect for Clan Tatsuya's desire for solitude. Their interactions with other clans are limited to trades conducted by the lowest members of Clan Tatsuya.   In terms of foreign powers, Clan Tatsuya staunchly upholds its isolationist stance, barring all interactions with outsiders. They prioritize the preservation of their ancient traditions and mystical practices, safeguarding them from potential outside influence. As a result, their relations with foreign powers are entirely absent. They prefer to keep their knowledge and mystic arts within the confines of their secluded mountain enclave.

They hold the belief that their mountain home is a sacred space, intricately connected to the spiritual forces that govern the universe. The clan values introspection, contemplation, and an unwavering commitment to spiritual growth. They prioritize harmony, balance, and the pursuit of inner wisdom.   Three notable traditions within Clan Tatsuya offer glimpses into their unique cultural practices:
  1. Ritual of Celestial Convergence: At certain celestial alignments, Clan Tatsuya gathers to perform a sacred ritual known as the Celestial Convergence. During this ceremony, the clan members channel the cosmic energies that align with the stars and planets, seeking enlightenment and communing with the forces beyond the physical realm. It is a profound and transformative experience, believed to deepen their connection with the divine.
  2. Meditation of Elemental Unity: Clan Tatsuya places great emphasis on meditation as a means of attaining spiritual clarity and attunement with the natural elements. Through deep contemplation and focused breathing exercises, clan members seek to merge their consciousness with the elemental forces of earth, air, fire, and water. This practice fosters a deep sense of harmony with the natural world and cultivates a heightened awareness of the interplay between energy and matter.
  3. Ceremony of Ancestral Communion: Clan Tatsuya holds a solemn Ceremony of Ancestral Communion to honor their forebears and pay respect to the spirits of their ancestors. During this ceremony, the clan members gather in the sacred groves of their mountain sanctuary, offering prayers, incense, and symbolic offerings to their departed kin. It is a time of reflection, remembrance, and the seeking of ancestral guidance for the clan's future endeavors.
