Fifth White~Black Succession

The Fifth White-Black Succession lasted two years but was, in many ways, a forgone conclusion from the start. Asa Mosal and his seventeen year reign were universally despised but nearly all Yurans. Centralization efforts and the sheer devastation caused by the Mosals' mercenaries left their position weak and untenable from the start. The Imperial army's salaries went unpaid and many munitioned. Asa Mosal's attempts to capture the hidden Angaras were frustrated at every turn, with the living head of the Angara family, Koin Angara, becoming something of a minor folk hero to the people of Yura with each successful escape. Finally, in 1288 A.C. Koin Angara called on all the Satraps to free themselves from the grasp of the Mosals. For the first time all the Satraps rallied around the Angaras, even Arismat, after secret negotiations with Koin Angara. With no internal backing the Mosal's army was surrounded and systematically destroyed on all fronts eventually falling back to Magava, Capital of Yura and Artamus. A year long siege commenced and as the winter of 1290 A.C. began the Mosals, starved for food, morale, manpower and resources surrendered. Asa Mosal committed suicide rather then risk capture and torture. Attempts to smuggle out Soun Mosal and the remaining members of the Mosal family were foiled and they were all imprisoned. Koin Angara had the remaining Mosals tried, with all the Satraps acting as judges. A unanimous verdict found them guilty and sentenced them to death. The death of the last Mosals made their cadet branch extinct, ending the White~Black Successions. Following their death all the Satraps and Koin Angara convened, drafted, and signed the Treaty of Redress, fundamentally changing Yura and restoring peace to the continent.  Koin Angara, Emperor of Yura and the House of Angara reigned supreme, beginning a period known as the Angara Restoration.

The Conflict

Prelude

The Mosals forces were scattered throughout the continent working to maintain order. The bulk of the Imperial Army was stationed in and around Artamus. The Satraps forces were divided throughout the continent as well, but many were secretly converging to form larger armies.

Deployment

The armies of the Satraps rebelled against the Mosals and attacked all at once. Their armies proceeded to surround and siege any imperial forces who did not surrender outright. Magava, Capital of Yura and Artamus was attacked and after months of indecisive skirmishes and failed sorties was put under siege.

Battlefield

The bloodiest battles were all in Artamus, most notably the siege of Magava, Capital of Yura and Artamus. Nearly all of the casualties on both sides died from starvation or disease rather then at the hands of the enemy.

Outcome

The short-term effects of the Fifth and final White-Black Succession were numerous. First, the Mosals and their bloodline went extinct, ending their cadet branch. Second, this extinction allowed Koin Angara to declare himself Emperor of Yura. Finally, the crisis ended with the signing of the Treaty of Redress an extensive document that fundamentally restructured the Empire and the relationships between the Satraps and the Imperial Throne.

Aftermath

The long-term effects for Yura were many. The most obvious long-term effect was the end of the successions and the rise of Koin Angara, Emperor of Yura, who ushered in an era of relative peace. In addition, the Treaty of Redress caused an overhaul of nearly ever aspect of Yuran political society. Third, the devastation caused by the previous succession haunted the Yuran economy for many years and recovery was slow and painful. Yuran society would recover but the scars of the war remained until the present.

Historical Significance

The historical significance of the Fifth White-Black Succession cannot be understated. The Treaty of Redress changed Yura forever, and following on its heels were the creation of new political parties, an elevation of The Imperial High Council, the founding of the The Ako {Unity} Pact and countless other large and small changes. Notably, the end of the successions brought to Yura the longest reigning emperor and the longest period of relative peace the continent had seen in over a century.

Legacy

The legacy of the Fifth White-Black Succession would be one of opposites. Koin Angara, Emperor of Yura would simultaneously sign the Treaty of Redress, weakening his political power, while also spending large amounts of wealth to increase his own army and navy. The devastation would see the economy stagnate many decades, but the Satraps and their nobles would continuously grow wealthier. Finally, the borders established by the Second White~Black Succession would be officially implemented. This action caused a great deal of resentment among the Satraps who lost land notably Narapus and Valpalal. (This loss ultimately created the impetus behind the formation of The Ako {Unity} Pact.)
