Charmite Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Charmite

Charmites are large larva-like invertebrates found across the world. They are slug-like, having no legs and leaving a trail of mucus.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The most common charmite is the desert charmite, possessing pale skin, shining yellow in the light. All charmites have a long, slug like segmented body, and has 2 large eyes on stalks. They have a small mouth between those eyes with a small beak.   Charmites in different regions will have different coloured skin.

Genetics and Reproduction

As charmites are wandering about, they release eggs every so often. These eggs just remain there until they hatch, not being cared for by the parents. The eggs hatch and the babies are left to grow quickly to survive. In a year, it is estimated charmites lay around 4000 eggs, only about 2% survive.

Ecology and Habitats

Charmites like to slither under the ground or amongst foliage. They leave small trails of mucus wherever they go. This mucus contains minerals that will bring life to the rotting leaves, or the dry sands, or wherever it goes. What that means is that wherever the charmites go, plants grow. Charmites in the deserts of Sarra tend to stay round oasises, gradually expanding the tropical climates around the water to create mini biomes. The charmites in the forest bring to life small plants and mushrooms in the ground.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Charmites feast on the small insects, the leaves and dirt it finds as it wanders about. If there isn't much food in their area, they will slither around in circles and eat the food it grows.

Additional Information

Domestication

Charmites are valued by harmonids. When harmonids need plants growing, they can hire charmites from a local pet shop and let them free in their desired location. The charmites get to grow plants in that area, satisfying the harmonid, and the charmites get a bunch of treats. This practice is used across the globe.
