Kiniswell University for Magick and Medicine

Serving the dual purpose of educational centre and guildhall, the Kiniswell University keeps things running smoothly by having everything logically organized and keeping very strict schedules on classes. The mundane school and student dormitory only take up a small portion of the building's whole, with the rest of it being dedicated to the Mage Order's needs.

Purpose / Function

When the university was first built, it was intended solely for the purpose of housing the Mage Order and training new mages. It had more space than was actually needed for the then quite small collection of wizards in Kiniswell.   In present times, the building was opened up to the children of nobility as a school. This benefited the Order in two ways: it gave them a steady supply of funding for their research, and it allowed them to screen the children that came into their care for any latent magical ability that they could harness and cultivate.   A small portion of the main entrance hall is set aside for displays of various artifacts found by the mages, as well as new enchantment technologies the Order has developed. It serves as a reminder to the city council of the essential work the guild does for the city.

Architecture

The exterior of the building is made entirely of cut stone. While the layout itself is rather simple, the architects took many liberties with the university's decor. Being well-paid for this particular project, they embellished the balconies with finely carved pillars and slipped beautiful carvings of creatures into the walls. It looks more like a cross between a church and a noble's manor than a simple guildhall.

History

Construction began on the building in 962 AS and wasn't finished until fourteen years later, in the summer of 976. The Mage Order was still a relatively small guild at the time, and the building was far larger than they actually required. After several decades of portions of the university falling into disuse and the guild not being able to secure enough funds on its own to conduct its research to the full extent that they wanted, it was decided in 1043 to open the building up to the nobility. Young nobles would be taught all the latest sciences and political information, as well as essential skills in order to prepare them for succeeding their families.
