Enchantment

Enchantment is a sort of magic-tech that was widely practised during the Age of Dawn, according to anecdotal evidence, but was lost during the Fall of Magic. Artifacts, the ancient product of the process, can be found in various locations across the Kingdom of Cynia, particularly where older settlements once stood.   While the art of enchantment is currently being studied and practised by the kingdom's more powerful mages, particularly those at the Kiniswell University, humanity has yet to recapture the ease and finesse with which the ancients had managed previously. Enchanted items are now considered luxury goods, only found in the possession of the wealthy upper classes and within the Astralan Church.

Utility

The purpose of enchanting items is and always has been to save a caster the energy and expense that would normally be required to cast a certain spell multiple times. Crystal lamps, for example, are used to light churches without the need for fire and the fuel it would require. Mages who are sent into combat might enchant a wand or other implement with a lightning spell in order to conserve their own magical power for longer, more drawn out battles. The use of enchantment, however, is reserved for combat and activities that are played out frequently enough to justify the use of such an intensive process.
Access & Availability
Only powerful mages are capable of imbuing enchantments into objects. Due to their rarity, the enchanted items are reserved for the wealthy and those of high status. Any other enchanted items are from before the Fall of Magic, near the beginning of the era, and are prohibitively expensive for anyone not of great means.
Complexity
Enchantment is a highly complex process, often requiring expensive resources in order to allow the spell to manifest properly. Mages today are uncertain how mages of the past were able to seemingly so readily imbue items with magic, such that the technology could be used even on mundane things (eg. Warming Brooches).
Discovery
While it is unknown when the process was initially developed, it was recently re-discovered by the Mage Order of Kiniswell some 400 years ago after extensive research into some of the Artifacts found in the catacombs beneath Kiniswell.
