The First Battle of Aletheia

The city of Aletheia was strategically constructed so that not only might it never see an invasion, it was hoped it would never even be discovered by hostile forces.   The First Battle of Aletheia occurred in the year 999 Pax Lupus.   Through unknown means, Lizardfolk managed to locate the hidden city. While the entrances to the surface were concealed, sealed, and magically hidden, subterranean aquatic tunnels that fed pools of water were taken advantage of by the invaders.   Multiple armed lizardfolk, some riding armored crocodiles, attempted to slay the Deaconess and otherwise pillage the city.

A team of elite mercenaries, summoned by the Deaconess based on information given to her by Bichael the Diviner, happened to be present at the exact moment of the attack, and gave a vigorous defense.   The Deaconess was ushered to safety by Spork the Gnome artificer, after receiving only apparently minor injuries.   The battle was initially joined by Gerhart Singleshade, Golraak Stormbear, Jean-Claude Windish Benoit, Jannis and Arthur Ains.   Apparently tracking the invading army, Queen Yewthinca demolished a hole in the roof of the main underground chamber with her colossal spider mount, Rasputin.   She was able to quickly help repel the invading forces. Tragically, the aasimar cleric Jannis was slain during the cave-in.   Spork quickly realized the attack vector and made efforts to seal the underwater tunnels and repair the hole in the main chamber ceiling, using natural rock formations in the patch to maintain the magic-nullifying properties of the construction.   One lizardfolk invader was captured by Jean-Claude Windish Benoit, former resistance leader. Questioning the creature was unhelpful.

"It beggars disbelief that the lizardfolk could have discovered the hidden city and planned the invasion without assistance or prompting," Sarfunkle summarized.

The Conflict

Outcome

Defenses were shored up and plans were accelerated to approach Holy Hill. A key member of the elite strike team was killed, forcing the queen to take her place.

Aftermath

Aletheia no longer believed itself to be immune to attack, invasion, or destruction.

Officially, the Deaconess passed away of old age, but some believe she died either from unnoticed wounds, or the stress of the surprise attack.
The strike team sent to Holy Hill was less able to properly prepare for their mission.   More hostile actions were taken against the clamoring lizardfolk encampment on the outskirts of Hindland.   New council leadership adopted a more wartime footing.

Historical Significance

Technological Advancement

Custom armor on a colossal spider leg was used as a battering ram to break through feet of solid rock.
