The Book of Zed
The Book of Zed is a tome that a shadowy cabal known as the ALUMN desperately sought.
It is believed to have been written by Archmage Zikrieg, the former headmaster of Zikrieg Academy.
It was stored in the basement levels of the magical university. After the castle and grounds vanished in a magical explosion, the basement and foundations of the main building remained.
Expeditions into the "basement" revealed that it was in fact now an infinitely descending staircase, and a breach into another place where the laws of reality seem different.
This site became known simply as The Staircase.

The Book of Zed was apparently guarded by a strange, robotic imitation of Archmage Zikrieg, deep within the Staircase.

One of the many ALUMN-funded expeditions into the Staircase identified its location, which was relayed to the council.

It is believed that the ALUMN recovered the tome, or at least its findings. It is unknown how. Council member Rav'na'rel Val'cari was most interested in both recovering the book, and keeping its importance a secret.

It is speculated that the findings of the tome were instrumental in a project which Rav'na'rel Val'cari began on the island of Holy Hill.
