Neon God Species in When the Curtain has fallen | World Anvil

Neon God

The last few times he went past it, Vagabond could sense some weird spiritual energy coming from the local garbage dump. This time, his curiosity won, and he decided to scout out the area. It was getting dark, but he still had some time before it got completely dark. He started to look around for chains. And he could see them here. In fact, there were hundreds of them, leading to the center of the dump. And all of them were related to love and worship.
He followed them on a narrow cobblestone path.
Even the most loved items will end up on the junkyard or garbage dump at some point. They break down, their owner gets bored of them, or they are thrown out by someone who doesn't know their emotional value. At some point, the garbage dumps are full of stuff like that. In these places, the spirits of decay, attachment, and technology start to eat each other, growing larger and larger. Those who survive long enough become gods among their kind, and start to influence around them, forcing them to worship them and build them churches of waste.

The warning signs

After the Extinction, junkyards and dumps are still visited by the scavengers looking for anything useful. Recognizing one that is inhabited by a Neon God isn't that hard of a feat, as usually they are surrounded by hundreds of signs and painted walls, each promising a haven, food, water, and salvation. Those looking for something will usually see signs talking about that thing. And yet, for such an obvious bait, there are those who let their curiosity take over.   Just entering the haunted dump isn't that bad. As long as one knows to cover their ears and doesn't enter the "church", they can travel around the area fairly safely. Even Neon Angels, the servants of their deity, will ignore them under those conditions, leaving them to scavenge peacefully (as long as another type of Spirit doesn't show itself up).

The churches of trash

While traversing the dump that is the home to the Neon God, one may encounter mound made out of trash. This mound is a church made to be a place of worship of the God of the Dump. There are usually one or two entrances with paths cleared of any garbage leading to them. The entrance is just a hole, usually guarded by a small group of Neon Angels, however, they tend to hide their presence during their guard duty. They tend to ignore those who walk around the church or enter it, livening up only when someone wants to leave the church.   There is a chanting that can be heard even from the outside of the structure. It is ill-advised to listen to it as it influences those of weaker minds. It is an invitation, which compels them to enter the church and see the face of the one they are going to worship.   When entering the church, one will notice that the path inside the mound leads downwards and has been dug out by someone, probably the hands of the worshippers of the Neon God. At some point, the tunnel opens up into a large area. This is where the congregation takes place.

The congregation

There were hundreds of Spirits and a few humans there, all of them attached to something further inside with chains symbolizing idolatrous worship. Vagabond approached one of the men and tried to speak to him.
No answer. He was gone.
Everyone here was praying towards something farther in the room. Vagabond sensed it before he saw it.
When entering the area where the congregation takes place, the first thing one will surely notice is numerous beings there, all completely absorbed with prayers and other rituals. Most of them are Spirits, but one can probably spot some humans and animals. There are also some Neon Angels patrolling the area. All of the worshippers are mutilated in some kind of way, some bearing way more wounds than others. Speaking to them won't yield any results. For anyone who has visited the altar, it's already too late for them and they are under Broken God's control. Trying to get them out of the church will enrage them, leaving them screaming nonsense and attacking anything that stands between them and the church. It will also attract a now hostile attention of the Angels.

Altar and a God

Farther in the room, Neon God sits in front of the altar. At first, one could mistake the "deity" for a random pile of garbage and neon lights, however, a closer look will reveal its arms, holding the ceiling up, similar to the statue of Atlas. It's usually around 5 meters tall and partially embedded into the walls of their "church". The heads of Broken Gods vary from one Spirit to another. Some have them embedded into the torso. Others have them made out of various junk, with lights forming their eyes. And yet another type that has been seen had giant mascots or cars for their heads. No matter what head they have, looking at one gives the impression that they are smiling. Getting closer to the Spirit is ill-advised as chants seem to get stronger there.   In front of a God of the dump, there is an altar made out of a table or any other flat junk the worshippers could find. Once in a while, one of the worshippers will stop their prayer, stand up and go to the altar. They will then announce their everlasting love for their "deity" and offer them a sacrifice of something they own. It can be an item they possess or a body part. The corpses of those who don't survive the sacrifice are disposed of by the Angels.
There it was, a being that caused it all. A giant idol of a god made out of garbage illuminated by neon lights. All of the chains led to its chest.
As Vagabond was observing it, more and more neutral spirits from before started to gather here. Besides the chain of worship, these ones were attached to their deity with another one. The chain of protection.
Vagabond disengaged a safety on his S.I.B.A.-R and began to run towards the idol. The glass and neon Spirits started to fly towards him. He stopped them by attaching some chains between them and the walls of a cave. As soon as he did that, the worshippers of the garbage god began to chase him. He was getting closer. All of the chains led to a specific point in the body of the statue.   And then he jumped into a pile of trash trying to reach whatever was there. He could feel hands and jaws trying to pull him out. As they started to do that, he finally caught the thing he was looking for. And then all stopped.   Vagabond left the pile of trash. Every worshipper of the false god was dead. He looked at what he was holding in his hand. It was a pretty cute doll. He knew someone who would like it.
Origin/Ancestry
Garbage, technology, attachment, love
Other names:
Garbage God, God of the dump, Broken God, Trash masters   Taboo:
Broken Gods can't harm their worshippers and potential worshippers by themselves in any way.
They are heavily tied to the material world and as such, they can be killed if the core within their body is destroyed. The core is a single item, so filled with love that it almost emanates it. Still getting to it might prove difficult as bot the worshippers and the Angels will protect their "deity".   Reproduction:
Spirits cannot reproduce.
Finally, he got to the place where all of the chains were leading. A giant pile of garbage with a cavern carved out into one of its sides. There was some kind of chanting coming from inside, a sound which made him feel the sweetness in the air. A command to obey. There was something under that mound that could control other beings, even Spirits. If he wasn't a Faceless One, he would probably be gone already.
Suddenly, a bright light stabbed him in the eyes. A neutral spirit of a kind he didn't know showed up. It had wings made out of glass and a halo made out of neons.
Vagabond went past it and entered the mound.

Heart of a God

If one manages to pull out the core from the body of the Garbage God, all of the worshippers will die at the same moment as their "deity". The Angels, who were attached to it simply by being a similar kind of a Spirit still will be hostile towards the blasphemer.
Then, after a few days, the entire mound that was held up both by arms and the influence of the great Spirit will start to fall apart.   If one has enough time to take a look at what they have in their hand, they will usually recognize a teddy bear or another toy that was thrown out in the past. Even after the death of the Spirit, the core is full of its essence and can be used by anything that can be powered by spiritual energy. Or it can be used as a really good bait for other Spirits (so one should watch out when carrying it).
