Queen Catelyn Stark

Her Grace Queen Consort of Arnor and the Isles of Skellige. Catelyn Stark (Née Tully)

Queen Catelyn Stark, née Tully, was born a princess of Tameria as the daughter of King Hoster Tully. When she was young she was promised as the betrothed to Prince Brandon of Arnor, but after his untimely death in the war against the pale orc Azog, she instead married his younger brother Eddard who became King of Arnor after his father.

Together, King Eddard and Queen Catelyn sired five children who would be born Princes and Princesses of Arnor, Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon.

Queen Catelyn has adapted to the life of a Queen of Arnor, learning elvish and adapting to Dúnedain customs, but still feels a stranger in the land from time to time, not sharing their religion of the Valar and sometimes still unnerved at the sight of creatures like Dwarves, Giants, Halflings and Dryads, but has adapted to life in the north

Personal history

Born a princess of Tameria and the eldest daughter to King Hoster Tully and his wife, Queen Minisa. She was anointed with the seven oils and named in the sept of the palace of Riverrun in the captial city of Vezima. Catelyn had two older brothers, who both died in infancy, causing her father to regard her as his heir until the birth of Catelyn's younger brother, Edmure. Catelyn also has a sister, Lysa, who is two years younger than her. Her mother Minisa died in childbirth with her fourth son and sixth child, who also died shortly after.

Catelyn was raised at Riverrun. She was close with her sister Lysa, and would play with her two younger siblings, as well as with her father's young ward, Petyr Baelish. Just as her younger siblings and Petyr were wont to do, Catelyn would go to her uncle, Prince Brynden Tully, with her tears and tales, whenever King Hoster was too busy, and Queen Minisa was too ill. When Catelyn's mother died in childbirth, along with her son, King Hoster told his daughter that she had to be the Lady of Riverrun in her mother's stead. Catelyn does not have many memories of her mother, though she still remembers her warm smile and soft hands. Her relationship with her father was a close one, and according to Catelyn, Lord Hoster cherished her best of all his children. Whenever Hoster would ride off to court or a battle, he would tell Catelyn to watch for him from the battlements of Riverrun, which she did.

When Catelyn was twelve years old, she was betrothed to Prince Brandon Stark, the heir to the throne of Arnor, the largest kingdom of Westeros, filled with elves and the long living fair people of the Dúnedain, the decendants of Númenor that she read so much about. When she found out she was to be queen of Arnor, she thanked her father for making such a splendid match for her.

Lord Hoster Tully's ward, Petyr Baelish, was less pleased with the match, however. While Catelyn had come to regard Petyr as a brother, Petyr had fallen in love with Catelyn.

When the date of Catelyn's wedding was announced some years later, Petyr challenged Brandon to a duel for her hand. Catelyn refused to give Petyr her favor when he asked, giving it to Brandon instead. She begged Brandon not to kill Petyr, and he agreed. Petyr was severely injured during the duel, and the final cut Brandon gave him was so brutal that Catelyn was convinced the younger boy would die from it. Petyr did not die, however, but was given a fortnight to recover at Riverrun before being sent away. Catelyn did not go see him during this time, nor did she say her farewells to him when he left Riverrun.

Brandon however was forced to return home to the north when word reached him that his sister, Lyanna had been taken by the pale Orc, Azog and his army. King Rickard and Prince Brandon rode north with a great army, but the army was slaugtherd by the orcs and Brandon was beheaded in battle by Azog the defiler and King Rickard dying shortly after.Catelyn was grief stuck at the death of her betrothed, having been infatuated with the handsom northern warrior Prince during his time in Tameria. Catelyn spent days in her room crying for her beloved Brandon.

A few days later however, he father, King Hoster arrived in her room where she was still lamenting over Brandon and told her that Brandon's younger brother, Eddard who would succeed his father as King of Arnor would marry Catelyn to secure the alliance with Tameria so that they would march north and aid the Arnoreans. Catelyn reluncantly and somewhat hesitantly agreed, so that his father would march north with King Eddard to fight the Orcs and avange Brandon.

While Catelyn agreed to do her duty and marry Eddard, she was not sure if she'd love him and was hesitant, he seemed to be of the exact same age as Brandon, seeming to be roughly twenty five years old, while Princess Catelyn was only eighteen. Later after the wedding when the two were left alone in their bed chambers to consumate their marriage, Catelyn asked Eddard how old he was to which Eddard explained that he was about five years younger than Brandon which in years for the long living Dúnedain of the house of Stark was sixty four. Catelyn was initially stunned, she had heard that the Dúnedain lived longer and aged slower than the Andals but the idea of her husband being over sixty years old seemed impossible to her.

History

The relationship between Eddard and Catelyn has seen many trials in the years since their marriage. In the beginning, they were not meant to be with both being in love with other people, Eddard loving the elf maiden Arwen whom he wished to wed and Catelyn being betrothed to and deeply in love with Eddard's brother Brandon.

It was not until Brandon was killed that Eddard and Catelyn wed the very day of their first meeting to secure a military alliance between their kingdoms. As they were saying their vows, they were strangers to one another, Catelyn mourning Brandon and Eddard guilt ridden over leaving Arwen.

The first night they spent together became greatly awkward when Catelyn asked Eddard how old he was, knowing that after people of the Dúnedain turned twenty they aged slower. While Eddard seemed barely twenty years old, he was in fact sixty four years of age and would live for hundreds of years to come, aging at a snails pace. It did not bother her with Brandon as it made her think of him as something majestic and eternal, but with Eddard it only made her feel small and vulnerable, wondering if she'd be anything more than a blink in his life,

Love didn't just happen to them, they built it slowly over the years, stone by stone.

Most people in Eddard and Catelyn's shoes tend to undergo the Feavaima, a magical ritual that binds the lifeforce of one individual to another, in this case it would be Catelyn's lifeforce bound to Eddard's. The Feavaima would make Catelyn's lifespan mirror that of Eddard's, while she would not reverse in age to Eddard's physical state she'd cease to age until she and Eddard were of equal bodily age and then Catelyn would continue to age at equal pase to her longliving husband. The reason the two have not undergone the Feavaima yet is because of their children. If Catelyn died after the feavaima was placed on them, Eddard would live on since the binding was a one way connection, but if Eddard died so would Catelyn and since Eddard faced the risk of one day dying in battle, Catelyn did not wish for them to both die since it would orphan their children. Now that Robb is twenty four years of age and Catleyn has no wish to have anymore children after Rickon, she has decided to undergo the Feavaima and bind herself to Eddard so that she can live through the centuries with her love.

History

Since she was a child, Queen Catelyn had always wished for a daughter and felt that all her prayers had been answered at the birth of her second child, beautiful princess Sansa with auburn hair just like Catelyn's.

Growing up, Sansa became everything Catelyn wanted her to be, she spoke and acted like a Tamerian princess and was infatuated with Andal culture pleading since she was a child to go south to Tameria and see where Catelyn grew up and when Catelyn invited Septa Mordane to be Sansa's nurse, the child began to learn about and worship the seven gods just as Catelyn did.

For the queen of Arnor, who'd felt she'd lived in a land of strangers all her life, Sansa was a growing reflection of the life that Catelyn had been seperated from. While Catelyn loved and adored all her other children, they were Dúnedain of Arnor, not only in blood but in customs, practices, lifestyles and beliefs, nothing like Catelyn in the way of culture, making Sansa the one that she could truely relate to.

Things however soured when Catelyn finally took Sansa south to Tameria to visit her father Hoster in her home of Vizima. Sansa was excited beyond compare and barely slept on their trip south. Throughout their journey through the south, Sansa was overjoyed at the color, warmth, fineries and elegance of Tameria and was adored and welcomed by all in the court of King Hoster. Later at night however, Sansa shared a room with some young ladies of Tameria but came into Catelyn's room with tears streaming down her face.

Sansa explained that she heard the girls tell Sansa the most awful stories about their home of Arnor, calling elves cursed child eaters and saying dwarves were mutant molemen and gloated about how their ancestors cleansed such "Vermin" from their lands, calling the Andal invasion a righteous crusade. One of the girls even said that her family had a necklace hanging on their castle wall with the pickled ears of elves that her ancestors killed and all the other girls laughed. Catelyn held her daughter close and told her people of the south don't understand the north and what life is really like in Arnor.

Sansa was quiet and sullen throughout the rest of their trip to Tameria and was most happy when they returned home. From then, Catelyn knew that the part of her daughter that wished to escape to the south and live like an Andal was gone.

Sansa began to change when they returned home, mostly for the better, being less spoilt and needy but was also less interested in her studies with Septa Mordane and began to take more interests in learning the Arnorean tongues and the history of their kingdom and within a year, Sansa forsook the worship of the seven all together, which broke Catelyn's heart a small bit.

Sansa was still the loving daughter to Queen Catelyn and connected with her in a way the other children couldn't, but Sansa was a northerner and both she and Catelyn were beginning to accept it.

Catelyn was very disaproving when the court druid Mousesack stated that Sansa had a storng aptitude for magic and Eddard had Sansa sent to Lothlórien to begin training in elven magic under Lady Galadriel. Catelyn begged Ned not to send Sansa away, but Eddard refused telling Catelyn it was Sansa's choice and that Sansa would only be away for a few months a year at the most. Catelyn then made every effort to visit Lothlórien at every occasion whenever Sansa was away for her studies which always warmed Sansa's heart.
