Sabine Hildepast

(a.k.a. Doppelhilde)

Sabine Hildepast is a Doppelganger and recent recruit of The Harpers, currently active in Waterdeep. She is perceptive, emotionally grounded, and carries herself with quiet composure. Her skills in infiltration, information gathering, and emotional reading make her an invaluable asset in delicate or covert situations.
Sabine's presence in the campaign began after the fall of Professor Sigmund Brandtner, when she was brought into the party’s orbit and eventually accepted as a trusted ally. While she keeps much of her past to herself, she has proven consistently loyal, principled, and pragmatic in both her words and her actions.

History

The Sigmund Incident

Sabine first appeared under the alias "Brunhilde" during the party's investigation into Professor Sigmund Brandtner's obsession with doppelgangers. She had assumed the identity after Brunhilde’s death, claiming she had not killed the woman but had adopted her form out of grief and survival.
When the party found the body of the real Brunhilde, they pursued Sabine. She ambushed Melvin but was tending his wounds when the others caught up to them. Sigmund, enraged, demanded her interrogation, but the party hesitated. The subsequent fight resulted in Sigmund's death.

Harper Sponsorship

After the incident, Sabine was brought to the Very Nice Inn, LLC by the party. There, she was introduced to Renaer Neverember and Volothamp Geddarm. Volo offered her shelter and oversight, and the two developed a rapport before he eventually left the city on business.

The Quillwright Investigation and Erasmus Kallor

When Threestrings asked the party to investigate the massacre at the Quillwright estate, he also asked that they work with Sabine. He revealed that he had been training her personally and trusted her judgment. Some members of the party were skeptical, but Grayson vouched for her inclusion. She not only aided in the investigation, but also the battle with Erasmus Kallor and his doppelganger minions.
With the corruption of the Harpers revealed, Threestrings asked the party to allow Sabine to stay at the Frightened Ferret for her safety as he worked to purge the Harpers of Erasmus' residual influence. She now works at the Ferret as a barmaid and protector when the party is away.

Helping to Save Jonnie

As Jonnie's behavior grew more erratic under the influence of The Obsidian Quill, Sabine observed quietly from the sidelines. When she realized the danger he was in, she inserted herself into a private conversation with Melvin, Kostas, and Grayson to push for action. Sabine assisted the party in reviewing evidence, advising them to retrieve the City Watch report on Horace Quillwright’s death, and provided crucial emotional support and direction as they tracked down. She urged Melvin to contact Olasha, believing her presence might reach Jonnie emotionally. Sabine was present for the severance ritual and the battle against the Quill Bug, where she bore witness to Jonnie’s near loss and his recovery.

Open Secrets

Sabine was once a member of the doppelganger den Sigmund had been tracking. She insists that her group means no harm to the city and is trying to covertly live honest, humble lives. She refuses to give any information about the den whatsoever, and has accepted that for their safety, she must exile herself from those who were her family.
