Behemoth
The Fringewalker; The Contrauthority; Regent of Mischief, Irreverence and Subterfuge
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
Behemoth is the Duskscape Regent of irreverence, mischief, subterfuge, anti-hierarchy and anti-authoritarianism. Strongly tied to bestial fae like yokai, bandersnatches and creatures known as "cats": Duskscape fauna that look superficially like nightstalkers, but without wings and two narrow, foxlike tails instead of feathers. While most Regents are aloof to and even ignorant of Waking Materia, Behemoth seems to show great interest in Waking Societies and how they function. (They also prefer humanoid forms, which further suggests the Cat God was a Near Umbral demon or fae prior to godhood.)
Behemoth is unique amongst the Duskscape Regents in that they spend much of their time on Waking Materia. An enigmatic being in the extreme, the Cat God’s purpose is difficult to deduce, although they seem to most often target authorities and power structures with their schemes. Is “punching up” simply their nature? Or perhaps they seek to understand Material society the way one learns how a watch functions... by taking it apart.
Other epithets for Behemoth include Beħemaat, Baħamut, the Fringewalker and Cait Sith.
Their alignment is Chaotic Neutral.Appearance & Heraldry
See also: Behemoth & Fringewalkers Image Gallery (External)Behemoth most often takes the form of a lithe humanoid, often with a squinting gaze, or a bipedal cat or nekomata, who are a type of bestial fae, likely a subgroup of the bandersnatches. At minimum, both forms are equipped with their Relic rapier, the Venus Gospel, a revolver (a small but powerful projectile weapon used in some demonic societies) and a tin of cigars.
Worship
"Worship" is a strong word for Behemoth's "clergy" as they are the god of irreverence, but nonetheless the admiration Behemoth's followers carry is sufficient that the being trades on some amount of divine quintessence. Sometimes called the Fringewalkers or the Knights of the Twin Tail, their followers have much the same modus operandi: introducing some surgical entropy into soul-deadening stagnation, mainly as applied to society. Indeed, some Fringewalkers fall into evil alignment, since opposing the very fabric of your environment can lead one to see enemies everywhere, but most followers have codes of conduct they follow, sometimes strict ones. Of course, these vary considerably between individuals. The Cigarette-Smoking Man
Particularly favoured members of Behemoth's "church" may sometimes encounter the a being known colloquially as the "Cigarette-Smoking Man", a figure that certainly seems to enjoy smoking cigarettes (miniature cigars, popular among Allesander nobility), but is otherwise not confirmably male nor even humanoid at all. Sightings are generally no more frequent than once a decade or so, and the being's intentions seem limited to the freeing of political or technological secrets, in general alignment with Behemoth's whims. Some believe the being to be Behemoth themselves, though oracles have denied its presence to be identical to the Cat God's spiritual presence. There is also the argument that the Regent is known to enjoy full-sized cigars as opposed to their miniature cousins.Domains
Behemoth's primary Domain is Trickery. Their secondary domains are Cities, Knowledge, Destruction, Truth and Secrecy.Favoured Weapon
Behemoth's favoured weapons are Rapiers and Unarmed/Kung Fu. Their Relic rapier is the Venus Gospel. They are a Divine Grand Master of Drunken Fist style kung fu, a feature they share with Silas, with some personal differences. As Behemoth is the much older being, it is possible Silas learned the techniques from the Cat God or one of their followers, or he may have simply discovered them on his own.
