Early Winter

Early Winter is the term given to describe a seemingly contrived frostbite that can overtake the human body. Throughout Trispir, healers are faced with this condition, almost exclusively appearing in those who have mishandled Eonwood, or something connected to the material, or the trees from which it can be gathered. Outlying cases are often attributed to losing the path on Greenmeadow Hill, or careless contact with the crystalline material that can be found in Alkir's Fjord.   Though most sufferers of the condition may have brought it on themselves by their own folly, the condition is terrible enough to warrant sympathy, though that is all that can be offered to those unable or unwilling to seek a blessing at The Healing Wall. It starts with the subject suffering constant chills, wearing warmer clothes than usual, and perhaps burning themselves without realizing it, due to trying to get warm at their campfire or woodstove. Within a week of initial contraction, the patients' fingers and toes blacken (one at a time in mild cases) and require amputation to slow the process. There is no known cure short of direct divine intervention or interaction with relics sanctioned for healing the humble.   The singular, though I think substantial, good that comes of this is that the condition's terrible assault on the eyes of bystanders, and nerves of the one suffering it, leads people to take extra care not to do any of the things known to put them at risk of catching the illness. Moreover it almost always moves those who would at first hold to their folly (in cases where a deliberate act led to their affliction) to seek healing where it can be found, with a contrite heart, void of the folly that brought them trouble in the first place.
