Corus Valis Character in Vodovo Viola | World Anvil

Corus Valis

First son of the head of the Valis house, Nioraku, and the twin brother of April. They were given no favors, beyond the money needed to raise, feed, and clothe the two; their mother was pragmatic with bringing up her children, refusing to spoil them with the fortune she had amassed. Once the two were independent, they were given their belongings, and a nominal gift, and were shunted out of the house to make their own path.
Corus lead the way, and the siblings discovered that they'd need to lean on one another to make things happen. April had the charisma, Corus had the plan. The pair migrated out towards the edge of their hometown, Asayuma, and discovered that there was an abundance of unclaimed scrap. Corus set to work cleaning the scrap, securing it, and handed it off to April to sell it. With this arrangement, the pair made enough to scrape by, but one slow night, the two turned their eyes skyward, as a Federation starship soared through the air. Musing on where it'd come from, the seeds that would one day lead the pair to seek escape from their humble home had been planted.
Months, nearly a year, of pinching every krugel they could, the pair of junkers had finally saved up enough to hitch a ride off-world. The two gathered up their belongings- including their bent datapads, the clothing on their backs, and a few packs of preserved foods, each- and made their way to the Asayuman starport, and bought passage on a shuttle.
And like that, the two had hit the wall; two cats out of the wild, with only a few krugels- credits once they had it exchanged- to their name. Continuing to demonstrate his strengths, Corus set to work probing openings, and earned himself an interview for an entry-level position in Metova Defense. Despite his threadbare, grimy appearance, he nailed the interview, and found himself soon in a cubicle, being guided through the UI of the company spreadsheet software, among other things. With only a little room to grow, in such a stuffy environment, he lucked out on saying the right things, at the right time, as he managed to get one of his superiors to laugh in apparent earnest, and after a few more exchanges, a friendship was forged between the two.
This friendship led, eventually, to an opening in the local Federation Academy, and he seizes the opportunity, signs up for the Naval category, intending to leverage the knowledge he gains for future ventures, and surprisingly, his sister manages to nail entry into the academy as well. He dedicates his time and effort towards the Academy, but, in one session, while putting to practice his learning of piloting, he inadvertently shows up one of his classmates, and a bitter rivalry begins between the two. 4 years later, the twin mauren graduate strongly.
The first day in boot camp, they were familiarized with some conventions of running a starship, and playing one's part as a crewmate. A week in, the linemen that remain are ferried into orbit, and brought aboard the training FI-Cor/9089, dubbed the "Centaur". This ship would be the home of these hopeful cadets for the next 4 years.
Things are routine for the next while, but on the last year of training, during a training exercise, a rogue vessel translates into the system, and immediately opens fire upon the training ship. Being the one at a gunnery station, at the time, Corus sharpens, and opens fire in kind, while his fellow cadets run evasive maneuvers. With only glancing damage, and enough suppressive fire laid down, the local fleet sweeps in to mop up the mess. Each of the cadets is given commendations for their performance, and though this commendation would mean great things for the mauren, the two knew well that they wouldn't be sticking to the Navy for long after this. With commission from time served, and skills learned, Corus and April set about on their own once more, putting much of their money towards Freelance starships.
    Old Description
A mercenary hailing from Nekmundis, the 'beast world'. After working hard to get off of their homeworld to explore the rest of the galaxy, he and his sister, April, went through Federation conscription, got basic flight training, and then got let go before being deployed into any major battle. After this little stint, they got jobs on the planet they wound up on, and worked some more to acquire sufficient funds to purchase a pair of decently sized craft for themselves. After everything, the two flew offworld and hooked up with Freelance to get a steady flow of available contracts. Nowadays, Corus often works alongside his twin sister to complete these contracted tasks.
In a manner quite dissimilar to his sister, he has taken on a much calmer, more explorative approach to traveling the system. Some call him a 'hopeless romantic' who 'seeks the beauty in things'. He doesn't deny these accusations, but nor does he outright embrace them.
