Nest of the Soul Eater

One of the four entities of Purgatory, the soul eater is a physical manifestation of a feral beast that devours souls. This shapeshifting monster traverses the realms in search of a meal. No reasoning, bribery or persuasion can deter the entity. When it catches sight of a lost soul, it will stop at nothing to consume it whole. Returning to its nest in the space between realms to hibernate, waiting until it is time to feed once more.

The Nest:

You would never want to find yourself in the nest of the soul eater. But if you do, you must be aware of the dangers that lie ahead of you. The only way of entering such place alive is by stumbling through one of its travelling gateways. Portals that links the nest to every realm possible in existence. Embedded into caves, tunnels and darkened pits allowing the entity to roam freely without the use of incantations or rituals.   As you walk through the gateway you will see the walls of tunnels mutate from earth and stone into oozing corpses of devoured souls. Stained with their final emotions of terror and frozen in time by feelings of hopelessness. Tossed to the side by the feral beast that have now become part of the edges of the nest.   The floors are uneven and sticky, with soul scraps and carcasses feeding pools of ectoplasm and what is presumed to be blood. What you will notice sooner or later is despite the foul dimly lit sight of the place, there is a lack of smell that goes with it. In fact there is no odour at all. Or the stench of death is so powerful it has left your senses overloaded and broken inside the nest. But your eyes can tell there is some form of smell, as your eyes burn by the invisible fumes.   And the air, it grips your throat and burns your skin. As if you have climbed to the highest peak without a single layer of warmth. You would assume your skin would have turned a pale blue, but instead it appears to look the same. Just more muted in colour than usual. All the colours of the nest look this way. Muted, dull, lifeless. As if the colours of the place have been removed and left a monochromatic painting in its place. Especially at the heart of the nest, where the soul eater lays.

The Creature Itself:

Due to its shapeshifting abilities, no one is able to describe the true appearance of the soul eater. Instead those brave enough to put it into words describes it as morphing into your greatest fear. With holes that lead to the void where eyes should be and rows of teeth to shred the unfortunate souls it can find.
I heard rumours once. Something deep, deep underwater where even the bravest of warriors refuse to swim. A monster so large and so terrifying, it could eat your soul. Leaving nothing behind. I'm not suppose to say its name out loud, but if you ever hear the name Fringehead Captain, I suggest we turn around and never look back.
— Col-Cha, Gillan Sailor under the command of Captain Hoarwae
Many realms have a version of the soul eater. Scholars of the disbanded Realm Rangers proposed that every version of the entity was in fact the same, just in a different shape. In the realm of serpents, they call it Apophis, the natives of the water realm deem it Fringehead. And in the realm of magic, the Consumer.
