Realm Rangers

The Realm Rangers, a band of explorers now lost to time. This once great group of travellers, heroes and scholars were known for being the major organisation in the realm of Magic who recorded, organised and mapped all the weird and wonderful encounters of the realms. Dedicated to learning anything and everything they could about the known realms. Things such as, what resources it had to offer, what dangers would be encountered and if intelligent life existed in the vast wilds of this ever expanding list of unknown worlds.
It saddens me to see such a large portion our history wiped from existence. Our fears paved the way for a dark future that has only been rectified in more recent times. To have lived in an age where, we could wander freely. Explore other worlds sounds simply delightful, does it not? That's the reason I began my research, the concept of people who seek knowledge is one I am in awe of.
— Benlar, Mythology Researcher
As portal magic and realm travel became more and more popular during the Exploration Age, the Realm Rangers opened their doors to the public allowing anyone with a thirst for knowledge, adventuring or research to offer their skills as a paid profession. Based in the city of Birohhal the rangers occupied a number of towers interconnected with hanging bridges to call their headquarters. Generations later they expanded operations overseas to the continent of Ascor, in the kingdom of Shenaria, to allow them to be closer to The Crossroads.

Roles & Titles

The rangers worked by having small teams made of three to eight beings, each with a unique responsibility within the group. Those teams would then report to higher ranking members and advisors who would control the knowledge and secrets within the confines of the headquarters.
  • Defenders: Heroes responsible of taking on any dangers encountered in the realms and ensuring the safety of the others
  •
  • Librarians: Those who were too old or perhaps too injured to endure field missions would stay in the libraries, instead learning as much as they could about a particular realm. Often being experts in one or two areas. These members would also be part of diplomatic missions, ensuring laws and traditions were not broken.
  •
  • Monitors: Members that recorded everything they encounter in the realms, then returning to the libraries and writing reports for others to read.
  •
  • Portallers: An important member of field teams, responsible of opening portals and keeping them open for the rest of the team to return
  •
  • The Mapmaker The title of a single member of the rangers, elected to be in charge of mapping the known realms. A highly important member and the only member to have access to the entire map of the realms.
  •
  • Waystone Experts: Members who didn't get involved in field missions. Instead they continued the original research of Apatur, Acuran of Waystones, refining portal magic and discovering the magical connections between the realms.

History:

What the public believe to be the Realm Rangers was only around for 700 years during the age of Exploration. Eventually disbanding after the band of realm travel, resulting in many thinking the group to be obsolete. But this is far from the truth.   A smaller group of realm rangers existed earlier in the timeline. Although they did not calling themselves Realm Rangers, they served the same purpose, this generation of scholars, adventurers and explorers was led by Apatur. Made up of only a select few he deemed trustworthy to share his findings with. Thus creating the first iteration of the Realm Rangers.   Realm Rangers became a well known profession for the remainder of the Exploration Era. Once the realm travel ban began however, the rangers quickly became a very dangerous job. Many cities and kingdoms would not give the rangers enough time to return all members safely back to Violem, thus upon return many of the field teams were penalised for travelling between realms. Resulting in members of the group being arrested, chased and in extreme cases killed for their "crimes" against the new laws surrounding travel. The extreme measurements of the cites and kingdoms quickly led to the disbanding of the Realm Rangers.   Many members would continue to work in secret to preserve the knowledge gained about the known realms and develop the portal magic used to travel between the realms. Knowing what dangers lived beyond the world of Violem, the new mission of this secret team of Realm Rangers was to prepare and protect the world from external threats.

Notable Member:

I-Lo-Rae: The ninth mapmaker. The only known Air Alum to hold the title and was said to be the last mapmaker to add additional realms to the overall map.   Jo-Lene: The only known time Alum to join the ranks of the Realm Rangers as well as the first Alum to hold the title of a portaller. Designing an entirely new way of creating portals for so that other elemental users could follow in her footsteps.   Naddalier Vanberet: From one of the famous families of Birohhal, Naddalier was the first of his family to join the rangers as a renowned portaller. Often selected to partake on more dangerous missions.   Piplin the Fairy: The first member of the rangers not from Violem, a Monitor who was led his team as an expert on his original realm.   Zevus: A defender who continued to work as a ranger after the portal ban, preaching to the masses that the rangers were still needed. This led to him being hunted and killed by government forces in Ferrelwood.
