Nhara Vrue aka Dream Eaters
Have you ever had a bad dream? Woken up because you were scared of a nightmare? It happens to all of us at some point or another. But what if it keeps happening? For days maybe even weeks? If that is the case, maybe you have Nhara Vrue living under your pillow.
Nhara Vrue, also known as the Dream Eaters, are a parasite that infects the dreams of sleepers, causing horrifying hallucinations and nasty nightmares to scare the dreamer and create fearful energy. The Dream Eater then feeds on such energy, growing stronger and hungry for more and more. Until the point where the dreamer either dies of fright and exhaustion or going insane and becoming a wight in the process. Evil creatures and one that should not be taken lightly.
They are believed to spawn in mortal realms when a high concentration of internal fear is present. From there, the pea sized monsters pop into existence looking rather innocent. Initially looking almost friendly with round eye sockets, a rounded mouth and two rounded fins that protrude from its circular body. They float to the nearest pillow and hide under the pillow. Letting out small puffs of toxic gas to infest the dreams of others. Over time as the Nhara Vrue grows stronger, its appearance becomes more barbed, jagged and sharp. Growing spines on its back, the fins becoming pointed. Even its eyes and mouth will begin to resemble shards of glass, far more menacing from their previous rounded appearance.
Whilst they pose a dark fate for their victims, there has not been reports of Dream Eaters since the Exploration Times. Many believe the species to be extinct, much like many other monsters and species associated with the element of the mind, including Mind Alum. In the present, they are told as scary stories and nothing more. But it is always possible they could return.
These guys are pretty scary, even though they look rather cute! I like the dichotomy. I have a dream eater in my own world, but it's completely different. I love how different world builders can have completely different takes on the same thing! Finally, I know they say they are extinct, but I have trouble believing it. I'm sure that wherever there are nightmares, you're sure to find some lying around.
