The Great Nesting Tower

The Great Nesting Tower is the main home to Aeolian Gliders and is both a way point and a horror to sailors and pilgrims sailing across the Aurora River. Originally titled Pilgrims' Waytower, it once stood proud as a watchtower for sailors and functioned as a resting stop for Cliridian pilgrims travelling the river and observing Zauridians' Circlet. However, after the spoiling of The Church of Cliridizaun under the rule of (rank) Horston Rewtwair the church had to pull their purse strings tight in order to recover from the near bankruptcy and many precious outposts were lost as a result. The tower and its surrounding man-built islands were among those lost and soon fell to ruin.   The Aeolian Gliders took notice of the freed space and immediately took advantage. At first they took only the Pilgrims' Waytower and settled their flock upon the island, but soon other flocks and lone flyers requiring a home found the settlement and migrated over. After decades of territorial disputes so vicious sailors drink over the tales even centuries later, the winning flock took over both the Tower and the surviving lone flyers, flock remains and deserters. With the higher population the group, now officially a superflock, required more space and took control of the surrounding abandoned islands as well, stretching their territory over a third of that oceans river segment.   Meanwhile, the old Pilgrims' Waytower Island itself was steadily built upon by the main flock, parts of the ruined tower torn out, other parts reinforced and built upon by human ships they had ruined while hunting and protecting their territory. After their alterations, the tower was seven times as tall and four times wider. Cold winds formed fog surrounding the nests, covering it so entirely outsiders can only see a huge, blurred stack with unknown parts sticking out, surrounded by fog coloured by the reflection of the Aurora River.

Purpose / Function

The Great Nesting Tower currently acts as the main living grounds of Aeolian Gliders, housing primarily the dominant flock members and serves as the centre of the superflocks' territory. The gliders treat it as a home base and visit it for any matter of great importance such as a vital discovery, the occurrence of an emergency, the introduction life partners and flock gatherings.   Before the Tower became home to the Aeolian Glider superflock it acted as a watchtower for sailors and travelers as well as a resting stop and observational point for pilgrims traversing the Aurora River. The pilgrims rested and refreshed themselves before deciding whether to remain or move on. Most of those choosing to remain stayed in order to observe Zauridians' Circlet and surrounding revered holy places, to help with the work or to focus on self-reflection, meditation and scripture studies. Other chose to leave, either to continue their pilgrimage or return home.

Alterations

After the tower fell to ruin it was occupied by an Aeolian Glider superflock who made use of it as a home base and nesting zone. In order to meet their needs the intelligent creatures made many alterations. They tore out the observational dome and weapons points. Doors were pulled out and floors caved in before they reinforced the tower by filling and surrounding it with rocks and boulders. They built upon it using ships they had stolen or ruined and materials they'd pilfered from ruins and ports. The built island itself was built upon and expanded to support them and the tower grew several times in size. Passage ways were built with trick pathways leading to traps for intruders to fall prey to.

I hadn't thought of it that way but now that you've said it I adore the idea. That makes for quite the amusing image and I love it. :D Makes a for good human perspective idea. Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked it.
