Victoriam City

Victoriam: The city beyond the clouds. Victoriam once stood- or floated rather- as the pinnacle of the British Empire. Kept aloft by hulking Erythrian engines, Victoriam was a colony meant to showcase how the Empire had conquered everything in the known world, including the skies above it. Many more cities of this caliber were planned- the Audentiam, the Sophiam, the Lautitiam, and the Fideliam, to name a few- but none were completed due to the complete destruction of the land below. Those who live in Victoriam however, continue their lives, blissfully unaware that their beloved empire has become a wasteland.

Demographics

Victoriam is fairly homogenous in terms of ethnicities, however the higher classes have higher levels of diversity. Most people in Victoriam are decently well-off, however the descendants of the original inhabitants have lapsed into lower economic classes. There are a wide range of professions throughout the city, but they vary from district to district.

Government

The city is ruled by a council consisting of an executive branch, a military branch, an advisory/archival branch, a judicial branch, and a treasury, known as the The Victoriam City Council

Defences

There are two large mounted guns to shoot down aircraft at the Nordock district, and the height keeps it immune from natural disasters of the earth.

Industry & Trade

The factory district of Upper Essend produces manufactured goods, the Sussend District is mainly farmland, and the Wessend district makes most of its money with small businesses, or handcrafted goods.

Infrastructure

The city has a now-defunct shipyard, a grand road around the perimeter, engines to keep the city afloat, a farming district, and bridges over the voids left by broken ground.

Assets

The City has enough materials and stores of resources to sustain itself for around 500 years. It is also the largest stores of Erythrium in the Empire.

Guilds and Factions

The government is comprised of five noble houses, each with their own designation and roles: Wyverstone House (Executive)- the Wyverstones are the Governors of Victoriam, and are responsible for making the final decision on any action. Glorían House (Military)- the Glorians are responsible for the defenses and Military of Victoriam, as well as the city police force Sapie House (Advisory)- The Sapie family is the advisory and strategy branch. They specialize in the history of the Empire, and counsel the other houses. Lexington House (Judicial)- The Lexington family oversees the laws of Victoriam, and is responsible for maintaining the court system and acting as judges. Denerson House (Treasury)- The Denerson family owns the banking system, and operates the Victoriam Treasury. Allocation of resources also falls to this family.

Architecture

Most settlements are built in Victorian style, and are made from brick, wood, and the older, more extravagant buildings are made of limestone cladding in Gothic Revival architecture.

Geography

The City is a man-made floating island over the cold waters of the Northern Atlantic, yet the ground below is nearly always obscured by the cloud layer floating just under the edges of the city. Fresh water is evaporated from the ocean through a large pipe passing through a filtration system before it is distributed throughout the city.

Natural Resources

There are few natural resources, however some plots of farmland in the Sussend district provide crops for the citizens of Victoriam, such as grain, vegetables, some livestock, and dairy.

That's a nice article. I liked your map, it definitely made the article easier to read. I have a few questions :

  • what do the colors indicate on the map?
  • do the different families interbreed/form alliances? Is the transmission of the responsibilities hereditary, or is it shared the way it is right at this instant ?

I haven't finished the map legend yet, but heres the color guide: The pale green are warehouses/ apartments on the North Side Blue= Victoriam University Dark Purple= High-end shops and homes Light Pink= Middle class neighborhoods Brown and Green= farmland Dark Red= slums and tenements Grey= Factories Orange= The Atlas And in the center is the Victoriam Cathedral (Turquoise), and the City Council estates, Denerson (Yellow), Lexington (Green), Sapie (Blue), Glorian (Red), and Wyverstone (Gold). As for the second question, the families have avoided interbreeding thus far, because they didn't want to create any... awkward relationships down the line, but they always have maintained friendly alliances. I plan on finishing some articles about the individual families soon. Thanks for reading!
