The Kingdom of Savassan

It is a common saying that there are no heroes in the Kingdom of Savassan. This saying is not unfounded, either. There is little ambition in the minds of the population, as the halfling commoners are content to live on their farms and the high elf nobles have become stagnant in their ambitions, mostly focused on gossip, parties, and entertainment. Of course, this makes the Kingdom an entertaining place full of court intrigue that, to many people, is quite inconsequential and affects nobody important.   The Kingdom of Savassan is a declining nation. Invasion from the Forest of the Verdant Crown and by proxy the Sylvan Enclave has stripped them of more and more land over time. The elves of Savassan have tried to fight it off to the best of their ability, but anything they do to stop it only delays the inevitable. Some of the elves on the forest's outskirts have decided to embrace the Cypress Queen's ideals to save themselves, while others have fled further away.   Foothills comprise most of the kingdom's land. As such, a lot of lands are used for farming and ranching. This food provides for the country and is traded out to nearby nations that have limited farming capabilities.

History

In the early history of the Savas region, the elves relied primarily on river fishing and horticulture for food. The local river makes the land fertile, allowing for efficient farming. The river used to flood annually, leading them to move around following these yearly flood cycles. Their connection to the crops they grew and the rivers they fished allowed them to more efficiently farm crops, innately possessing knowledge and magic that could grow plants more efficiently. Their only consistent settlement area, Issthyr, had various contingencies to prepare for this flooding: buildings on raised platforms (which also allowed the land underneath to be used for horticulture in the dry season) and shelters outside the flood range.
When the empire began to move into their territory, their culture changed drastically. Forced to adapt to imperial culture, the Savas Elves began to make more permanent settlements, made easier by the empire's construction of dams to prevent the annual flooding. The introduction of full agricultural processes led to the creation of more permanent settlements. Though humans invented agriculture, the Savas Elves perfected it, creating highly efficient farming processes far greater than those in any other part of the world. Their innate connection to the grasslands and plants allowed them to understand the needs of the plants they grew and use magic to speed up farming processes. Crops that would, in any other situation, be harvestable only once a year are harvested two or even three times a year in the Kingdom.

Demography and Population

The upper-class population of the Kingdom of Savassan is primarily high elves, while much of the working class is occupied by halflings. Other races are present but tend to live similar lifestyles to the two aforementioned races.

Territories

The kingdom occupies the Duchy of Savassan, the Duchy of Issthyr, the Duchy of Sellone, and the Duchy of Vindral, though the Duchy of Vindral is currently being invaded by the Sylvan Enclave, as their forests move into the kingdom's territory.

Military

Much of the kingdom's army is comprised of mercenaries because, as the saying goes, "There are no heroes in Savassan". Very few people within the nation's population have the ambition to join an army seeking glory. Because of the profit the kingdom makes off of its trade, they can afford to hire mercenaries. The problem that always arises with mercenaries, though, is their loyalty. While mercenaries tend not to outright betray the kingdom or abandon them in their time of need, some of the less reputable mercenary groups sell themselves to the highest bidder.

Religion

The kingdom gets its name directly from Savassan, the god of elves, who is said to have originated from the High Hills in the kingdom's territory. Most towns, including the capital, have a temple devoted to him.

Foreign Relations

The Kingdom of Savassan has been as diplomatic as possible during the reign of Dorren Dawncrown. Recently, though, the Sylvan Enclave has forced him to abandon his peaceful demeanor as he races to obtain soldiers from mercenary groups and through diplomacy with other nations. Given the amount of food the kingdom provides to some other nations, the kingdom's continued survival is vital for other nations as well. The Maritime Principalities, having competition in trading certain goods with the kingdom, do try to pay off some mercenaries to leave the kingdom, further delaying their efforts to turn the Enclave away.

Laws

In the Kingdom of Savassan, rulers have never married, out of respect for their progenitor Savassan, who fostered their people by himself. When a king's rule ends, he normally selects a successor from among the noble families, naming them the royal family for centuries to come.

Agriculture & Industry

The Kingdom of Savassan is well known for having the best agriculture in the world. The hill elves and their innate connection to grasslands and crops gives them a unique ability to farm extremely efficiently. They have an affinity for agriculture and subsisted on fishing for millennia before the appearance of humanity. Both of these resources remain as the economic foundation of the Kingdom, whose citizens make a living off of little else.

Trade & Transport

The Kingdom still makes constant use of Imperial Roads, relying on them to transport goods across the world.
