Appius was born in 1195, in Pendragon Citadel, his family's ancestral seat. He was an intelligent and charming child, a far cry from his father Balbas, who was a lazy and gluttonous man. His mother was Gall Finch, the least important daughter of Lucius Finch. He was born with blue eyes, but got his nickname after an injury sustained in a duel he fought in his youth. He challenged a young Elf to a duel after the elf insulted his father, who was a notoriously obese man. Appius fought the elf in a swordfight, and within seconds of the fight starting Appius had impaled the elf with his family's shortsword. Crying out in pain and fear, the elf attempted to cheat and use magic, which led to Appius continually stabbing the elf. Out of desperation, the elf put his palm against Appius's head while he was being stabbed, and managed to let out some mysterious magic. All of this happened in moments, and after letting out the little magic he could, the elf fell over dead, and Appius fell over holding his face. Whatever spell the elf had used is unknown, but it permanently blinded Appius in hie left eye, and caused the eye to glow for the rest of his life. Appius never took a life after the duel, as the experience was very traumatic, and this event fuelled a hatred for elves that goes beyond even the common racism found in Hemlock. He passed this hatred down to his daughter, who famously disowned her own daughter for marrying an elf.Longing for Legacy
Appius Karas was a very intelligent and cunning man, however he was also very bitter. He believed that if he was born into a more successful House that he could have ruled all of Hemlock. House Karas has always been a rather minor House, owning little land and power. Appius wanted to grow his House into a major power, though he was largely unsuccessful. For this reason he wanted a son desperately, so that he could have someone to inherit his longing for power and position. Fate had other plans however, and his wife would have two stillborn boys. His wife died giving birth to his third and only child, a girl he named Adelpha. He never remarried, and instead decided to teach Adelpha all he knew, to groom her into the success that he longed to be. He did this rather successfuly, though he died of a sudden illness before his daughter was married. Ironically, despite all his attempts at growing his House, his descendents became infinitely more successful after his death, eventually becoming the rulers of Hemlock.Family Tree

Though Appius appears to love his wife deeply, he wants a son more than anything, and she is mostly around for that purpose. Cornelia on the other hand loves Appius, and feels honored to be married to the Lord of a Great House.
