Session 22 - A Town in Trouble

General Summary

3rd of Quickening

The morning dawn was breathtaking in shades of reds and oranges. Heavy clouds lit from within glowed as the sun begins to rise. Recognizing that such clouds suggested rain later, the party saddled up the horses and got on the road as soon as they could. Although the clouds continued to thicken and threaten, no rain fell and they made good time.

A little before noon, the team reached the turnoff for Mosshall and an unoccupied cart that had been pulled off to the side of the road. Slowing to investigate, they met Mal Routhson, a common tradesman. He was on his way up to Foxhall with a load of goods and had stopped to answer the call of nature. Hearing that the party was headed south, he warned that there had been some bandit activity of late.

With that warning ringing in their ears, the party was extra vigilant as they rode away. Stopping only to water the horses and taking care of the needful, the afternoon continued much as the morning, with the one exception that a light, misty rain had begun falling from the thick dark clouds above.

Janora came winging in overhead and landed in the road in front of the others, striking a pose as rain dripped off her pointy hat.  "Hi, I'm back. Glad to see you are still all in one piece," they said as they slid off the giant crow before dismissing it with a wave of their hand. "Just give me a few minutes to summon a more suitable mount for riding."

Everyone moved off the road a bit and under some trees that provided at least some protection from the rain. Janora spent time drawing the magic circle and calling up the giant St. Bernard once more. Riding on they shared news of the last few days.

An hour or two before sunset, there was a tremendous crack of thunder as a lightning bolt stuck a tree 100ft back up the road. As if that was the key to unlock the storm the rain began falling harder and in sheets. Looking around quickly, Janora said, "I've got a new spell that should...Perfect." Leading the others over to a flat space near several large bushes, the witch began to cast Tiny Hut.

As a dome of purple energy formed around them, Janora explained that only the four of them would be able to pass through. Unfortunately there wasn't room for the horses so after unloading the packs and gear, tied them to the bushes. Denye completed the arrangements by setting an Alarm around both dome and horses.

After getting things settled and dinner going, Ell asked "So Janora, wanna tell us about these adventures you had?"

The witch sighed, "Not much to tell I'm afraid, but we can do that in the morning. Now that I'm back with you all I can start putting the potion on my armor. It's going to take us almost a week. I say us, but I'm going to do all the work, I just need a drop of blood a day from each of you for the duration." Turning to look Ell in the eyes the witch continued, "Before anyone freaks out, this is only so that you can touch the armor without taking the poison damage."

Ell, still looking a little concerned asked, "Will...will our families be immune as well?"

Janora shook their head no, "This will only give you immunity to the poison."

Ell shrugged, "I suppose that would be okay." The others agreed as well and Janora pulled out a small bronze bowl and needle. Disinfecting the needle in a tongue of flame, they pricked their own finger first and allowed one drop of blood to fall into the bowl. Repeating the process with each of the others, including Helenwye, the witch measured out a portion of the potion and began drawing sigils and runes on the armor with the mixture, muttering under their breath as they did so.

4th of Quickening

The night was uneventful and the morning dawned bright and clear. The air was alive with the smell of fresh wet dirt and fresh green plants. The horses were damp but in good spirits....they had also picked most of the bush clean of leaves. Taking care of the horses and getting breakfast going the party headed out to the road...the dirt road.

No longer rutted dirt, it was now a muddy mess. Luckily it wasn't very deep mud and the ponies seemed to have no trouble with it and in fact seemed to enjoy it. The St. Bernard was less enthusiastic but willing kept up with the horses.

"So it's morning," said Ell, turning to look at Janora, "what did you find back home?"

"Questions mostly...a few answers," replied the witch. "I told you there was a note with that package I got in the Barren Forest. It led me to a key, which led to a chest where I found a few things. A book of family history, this fascinating quiver. I also found this box buried under the front steps of the cottage."

Ell asked, "I almost hate to ask, but can I see your magic box?"

Janora gave the young man a bit of a leer, but pulled out the strange carved box and passed it over to him before continuing, "I also spoke to the village elder. Things are getting worse but I'm not sure what I can do about it yet. I've asked him to help me do some research into my family history. I'll probably pop back over in a week or so...just to see if he's found anything."

Ell examined the box turning it from side to side to examine the carvings. Every side of the box was carved with scenes of productive life, people farming, smithing, building, fishing...living. But there did not appear to be any seam or sign of a lid. On one side a pair of antlers stand between to carvings and within the hooked prongs was a circular hole, about the size of a ring. Ell was also able to point out on the opposite side where the initials NC were carved as part of the background of the scene. Looking up at Janora, he asked, "Do the initials NC mean anything to you?"

The witch sighed, "Yes. So the box probably either belonged to the first Crowcaller or her daughter, Nelo and Nora. Well that is something at least. I saw the hole on the front, but I don't have a clue what would fit inside. I don't have any family heirlooms that I know of."

"Maybe I can learn something about it magical," offered Denye. "This will probably give me a headache but if we're just riding that will be okay." Taking the box and handing her reins to Ell in return, the wizard began examining it with her Appraising Eye. The artifact was arcanely sealed and could probably be opened with a Disrupt Magic spell. But that was only the first level of the magical melody. The box positively thrummed with abjuration and transformation magics. The underlying wards on the box were impressive, magical baffles that allowed specific energy to pass in and out, while restricted other forms of energy.

It was also clear that there was something magical inside of the box as well, but it was hard to make out any specifics on the magic under all the other layers. Relaying all of this to Janora, Denye handed the box back to the half-elf.  The small Corva had to grab onto the pommel of the saddle as she wobbled from the reaction headache.

Janora winced, "When we get to camp I'll make you some tea. Thank you for the information. It's clear that's it's all family related. I really don't know why we never talked about this, but maybe the elder will be able to find something useful or I'll come across something in the Book of Twilight."

The conversation turned to other things, Ell having realized that they were likely to make it to Englemarket in time for the last day of the Renewal Festival, began to regal the party with tales of Festivals in the past. The next several days were quiet and although Jilken kept watch for the bandits, there was no sign of them.

8th of Planting

Around mid-afternoon, Janora's mount warned the witch of something coming up behind. Using the earrings, they sent a message to the others saying, "Something is coming up and the dog thinks there are others on the other side of the hedgerows."

Denye sent Helyenwe to see if she could spot anything, but the tree lizard got distracted chasing a butterfly. A moment later four creatures burst out of the hedgerow. These were clearly undead who had been twisted with transformation magic turning them into part animal shapes. Two of the attackers were a jackal form and the others were hyena type were-creatures.

The hyenas attacked first. One ran toward Jilken and latched onto her arm with its sharp teeth. The other threw a javelin at Ell but it flew over his head as he ducked. Janora pulled one of the silver bolts out of the quiver before sliding out of the saddle and running forward to jam it into the shoulder of one of the monsters. Backing away a step, they watched to see if anything special happened, but the bolt didn't seem to be any sort of special damage. When it didn't kill the jackal, the St Bernard rushed up beside them and knocked the jackal over, pulling of an arm in the process.

Jilken turned to the hyena that had attacked her and reaching around behind her, she brought the war pick down with a vicious blow but the monster released her arm and dodged out of the way.

The jackal that Janora had stabbed stood up and swung it's dagger at the witch. They deflected it with an arm but came away with a shallow scratch. The other pushed through into the road behind the party and shot Ell in the back with an arrow, luckily the coat caught most of the blow.

Denye looked around and quickly conjured a swarm of small meteors. She sent one flying toward the jackal that was attacking Janora. The small fiery orb hit the creature in the side of the head and burrowed inside before exploding with a load pop and a short shower of black blood and bits of meat. At the same time Ell whirled around to face the jackal that had shot him and sent two beams of Eldritch Blast into the creatures chest. It flew into a nearby tree, it's chest a flaming hole.

The hyena Jilken was dancing with swung it's club, but the elf dodged contemptuously out of the way. The other one threw a javalin at Denye, but a sudden swirl of magic surrounded the wizard and the projectile was knocked out of the way. As if that wasn't enough two more hyena creatures pushed their way out onto the road. Both threw javelins at Denye, but her Shield spell sent them tumbling.

Janora screams out to the nearby creature and asks, "What is it you want?"

The demonspawn hyena near them spoke, it's voice guttural and harsh, "Blood....blood and meat."

The witch just shook their head and said, "I guessed that it was something like that. I suppose we can't interest you in just leaving?" The large dog let out a echoing bark that rocked the hyena back on it's heels. Janora followed it up with Burning Hands. The hyena dodged out of the way of most of the blast, but still came away singed and angry.

Jilken turned to the nearby hyena and brought the warpick up, catching the monster in the neck. Pulling it back as black blood began to spray everywhere, she brought the pick down into its skull and drove it into the ground. Pointing at the newcomers she called, "You two are next if you don't run. Half your pack is already dead."

The two creatures looked confused for a moment, but turned quickly when another jackal stepped out into the road and began barking orders. He quickly lifted his bow and fired at Denye, but the arrow landed in the dirt some distance from her.

Seeing this new threat Denye let out a bit of a squawk and sent two of the meteors at the jackal. One exploded and blew its arm off, the other sent it reeling for a moment before it stood panting and glaring at the wizard. Ell threw two more beams of Eldritch Blast and killed one hyena, blasting it up in the branches of a tree. The second blot hit one of the other hyenas pushing it back 10 ft.

The hyena, now focused on Ell, rushed forward and bit the young noble. In response Ell cast Hellish Rebuke and the creature was blown back and consumed with red and purple flames. The other hyena rushed at Denye and attempted to swing at her with his club but she just danced aside.

Janora seeing that these creatures were almost finished sent the dog up to attack the monster near Denye as they ran up and cast Spirtual Aid on Jilken. The elf gave a quick thank you before running up to shoot the monster as well. The first bolt when wide, but the second broke the knee.

The jackal fired off another arrow at Jilken, this time it found her calf.  It started to push it's way back the underbrush, but Denye sent two more of the meteors into it. The jackal was thrown back, its chest burning and sizzling.

Ell looked around and saw the one mangled hyena creature still standing. With a muttered, "How are you still alive?" he sent two bolts of Eldritch Blast, but both went wide. The hyena turned and started running away, pushing its way through the hedgerow.  Janora's dog, ran after the escaping creature, bounded over the hedgerow and came down next to the hyena and bit its head off.

With the threats neutralized the team took some time investigate the bodies. There was little of value on the corpses that remained but Denye was able to identify the spell that was used as coming from the Abyssal realm and being an amalgamation of necromancy and transformation.

With quite a few questions, the party picked up the pace and within an hour or so were riding through the gates of Englemarket. A largish town on two of the primary roads through the region, it is usually a bustling and lively place. Not so this evening, the streets were mostly disserted and none of usual trade caravans were camped outside. Leaving the horses at the stable just inside the north gate, Ell led everyone down to The Field to secure rooms for the evening and hopefully find someone willing to discuss the local gossip.

Pushing through the door of the inn the party found a mostly empty pub and a shortish human behind the bar stocking glassware. He introduced himself as Able Edenson and was more than happy to rent everyone rooms. Taking the keys, Ell asked if anything strange had been happening in town recently. That question seemed to unnerve the balding man, but he shook his head and said, "Not really m'lord. The mayor had to cancel the Renewal Festival and trade has been down ever since those demons showed up and started attacking folk. Dunno what the mayor is doing about, but she better be doing something."

The young noble nodded, "We had some trouble with them ourselves. Where could we find this mayor? We are something of problem-fixers and might be able to offer our aid."

Able pointed out the door, "Cross the square at the Town Hall most likely. She's probably still in her office, iffin y'all want to speak to her."

Opting to wait until the morning, the party headed up to their rooms to put down their gear and wash the road dust off. Janora opted to stay in their room and finish the Poisoners' Revenge Armor, gathering blood from the others before they headed down to the common room.
In the short time it took the team to settle in and head downstairs, the taproom had come alive as folk drifted in and the divine scents of roast chicken wafted from the kitchen amid the lively buzz of 30 different conversations.

As Denye went to claim a table and Jilken headed for the bar, Ell looked around and spotted a bard setting up his equipment. As Ell threaded his way through the tables, the man turned and smiled at the warlock's approach. Ell returned the smile and asked, "We're new in town. Do you play here often?"

"Well, welcome to Englemarket," said the tall man, with short, shaggy reddish-brown hair." And yes, I usually try to play here whenever my feet bring me to town. Old Able has the best food and mighty smooth pints as well."

Ell asked eagerly, "Any thing in particular you'd recommend?"

The bard laughed, "Always get the house special. It's never the same thing twice....but I've never had a meal I didn't enjoy."

"High praise, indeed," laughed Ell. "Have you been in town long?"

"A tenday or so," said the bard,  "Bryce Waune by the way, but aye, I always try to be here for the Festival. Sure the Haven Faire is bigger but there's less competition out here. I would have moved on once the Festival was cancelled, but the locals still appreciate my talents and I haven't wanted to take the chance traveling alone. Not with this monsters roaming the countryside."

Ell looked shocked, "Monsters? What kind of monsters?"

"The ones that have been grabbing folk off the farms, killing livestock and attacking travelers. I haven't seen any of them myself, but they say that they are some sort of demonic animals, or people twisted into animals. They haven't attacked the city yet, so most of the farmers moved their families back here to stay with family. None of them want to go out to their farms and plant the crops either."

Cocking his head to one side Ell asked, "Have you heard anything about where they are coming from? Or anything about what the mayor is doing about it."

Bryce laughed again, "You are full of questions. I believe that Mayor Lithino sent out two parties to investigate shortly after the monsters first appeared, but that was before I got here. As for where they are coming from, local opinion would tell you it's the fault of the 'demon witch' that opened an apothecary in town."

"Well," said Ell, "thank you for the information. I'm sure you need to finish setting up, so I'll leave you to it." Standing, the noble flipped a gold coin to the musician. Bryce plucked it deftly out of the air and said, "Anytime m'lord. And if your plans happen to take you towards Barebarrow perhaps we could travel together."

While Ell had been talking to the bard, Jilken had gone up to the bar to order a round of drinks. Pouring the pints, Able handed them over. After delivering a fruit juice to Denye, the elf slid into a seat at a nearby table, with several farmers. At first all three were so caught up in their argument about who's fields to plant first that they didn't notice Jilken.

Clearing her throat she broke in, "I couldn't help but overhear that you folk seem to be having some trouble. It's always good to know about local issues. So what is it that's keeping you from getting your crops in the ground?"

All three farmers turned to stare at the dusky elf in black armor. The one next to Jilken spoke up, "Well it's those demons. They be snatching folk up. Old Arvial just vanished yesterday. We found what was left of his horse still attached to the plow."

The man across the table slammed down his tankard, "It's that devil, the purple devil woman. She the one who called these things. If we run her out of town, they'll go away."

Jilken asked, "Do you even know what a devil looks like?"

"She has horns...and a tail," stammered the man, "and bright PURPLE skin."

"Sounds kinda hot," muttered Jilken as Denye asked, "Has she actually done anything threatening? Or is it just because she looks funny, like me." Mantling her feathers a bit she stared at the farmer who dropped his gaze.

The man looked at the table and muttered "Well she is running that apothecary...who knows what she gets up to with all those herbs."

Denye nodded, "So she's probably studied. I can see why you would find that threatening."

All three farmers gaped at Denye for a moment. Ell chose that moment to slip ihn wit a round of drinks for the table, distracting them as Jilken asked, "Any idea where they are coming from? Where a nest might be? My friends and I might be able to do something about them if we know where they are."

The first speaker took up the thread, "Don't rightly know, the mayor should know. I know of at least 8-9 missing people but they are all from different farms. But almost all of the farms between Englemarket and Killian's Roost have lost animals."

"Well, thank you all for the information. I think we shall pay the mayor a visit in the morning," Jilken stood, saluted the table with her pint and stepped up to the bar to order some food. The elf returned to the others and within a few minutes, all three of the party were staring at plates of baked porkchops with apples and onions, mashed tubers covered in cheese sauce and fresh sourdough rolls.

After dinner, Jilken decided to go for a walk through the town and see what could be seen. It took a while but she eventually found her way over to the apothecary that the farmers had been ranting about. A trim building painted purple with a cheery red door, the sign above declared it Belail's Apothecary. Unfortunately, by this hour, the door was locked and shutters covered the windows.

Jilken spent a few minutes walking around, getting an idea of the place, before heading back to the inn. Finding that the others had already headed upstairs, the Aiel sought her own bed for the night.

9th of Quickening

Everyone met up at breakfast the next morning and the rest of the crew filled Janora in on what they had learned last night. "So do we talk to the mayor first or check out this apothecary?" asked the witch.

Denye tilted her head back and forth in thought for a moment before saying, "I think both could have useful information. But it might be better to speak to the mayor first."

Jilken nodded in agreement, "I feel like this woman might be able to give us a better read on the situation. But it would probably look better if we spoke to the mayor first."

"Well," sighed Janora, pushing back their chair and standing, "if we're going to have to fight later, I want to be angry. Dealing with a small-town bureaucrat seems like as good a way as any."

Ell laughed as he too stood, "Now you're speaking my language, Janora."

"Plus," added Jilken, "we can probably get paid if we talk to the mayor."

"I believe," said Janora, "that Jilken is also speaking your language, Ell."

Leaving the inn, the party made their way across to the Town Hall. The front doors of the large squarish building led through a short stone corridor of 20ft before opening up to a reception courtyard. The high ceiling overhead was made of a transparent material much like glass. Speaking with the youngish halfling clerk at a tall desk, it was only about fifteen minutes before the party were led into an inner office, this one also with a clear ceiling. Part of the office was a garden and the scent of lilies and lavender filled the air.

Standing next to a desk looking over some papers, the mayor turned to greet the party. She was a tall woman, almost 7ft with the greyish skin that belied goliath ancestry. Long white hair tied up in a loose bun, she was dressed in a sleeveless yellow shirt with loose linen pants that tighten around the calf. Thick black tattoos spiraled up her right arm, disappearing in her hair line. "Welcome to Englemarket, I'm Mayor Anenea Lithino. I hear you wanted to speak to me about the attacks. I do hope it isn't just a complaint...I already have quite a few of those."

Janora cleared thier throat, "We do have some interest in these monsters yes. We killed six of them on our way into town yesterday."

"Six you say," said the mayor, "you must all be quite the warriors. I just wish we could find where these things are coming from and stamp out the source."

Jilken asked, "So have you looked for the it or just sat around?"

The mayor let out a bitter laugh. "Just before these attacks started, most of the town guards were called to Haven by order of the Queen. We're a peaceful town and it normally wouldn't have been a problem. I've sent two teams to look for it, but none have come back. I've sent messengers to Haven and they haven't come back either. My best guess is somewhere northwest. That's where the first disappearances happened. But there isn't any logical pattern to the attacks."

Looking up from her notebook, Denye said, "That at least gives us a direction to travel."

"You might also try speaking to Vilte over at the temple," suggested Mayor Lithino, "But if you folk can put a stop to whatever this is, I would be most grateful. I'm sure we can draw on the treasury for a sutible payment."

Ell smiled, "Oh yes, I've heard the gratitude of Englemarket is quite generous."

Janora just glared at the man before turning back to the older woman, "Of course we will see what we can do. There was something about those creatures that is clearly unnatural."

"Well let me know if I can help in anyway." said the mayor. With that clear dismissal the adventurers left her office and made their way back outside. Now with official sanction to investigate, the party decided to check out the apothecary and this devil woman.

Jilken led them back to the modest shop tucked away in the Mud corner. Inside, a pleasant smell of herbs and spices fills the air and shelves and shelves of remedies, plants and trinkets are on display. Behind the counter was a purple tiefling with scarlet hair, wearing a loose green dress with a leather apron, reading a book. Looking up as the party entered she stood and adjusting her gold-rimmed spectacles she said, "Welcome to Belail's, how can I help you today?"

"Hello sister," said Janora, "What is it you have here?"

"Potions, salves, poultices for small wounds, and the like for animals and people. Just trying to make the world a better place and trying to get by." This last was followed by a sigh.

Janora asked, "How has business been? Do you get a lot of interest from the town?"

"Well, it hasn't been as good as I'd hope. Still I have my own shop and I'm making enough to get by," replied the tiefling. "I had thought moving to a smaller town would be easier...less people to galk at me. Most of them are good people, they just need time to get used to me."

Janora looked skeptical at that but asked "Where are you from? And why pick Englemarket?"

The tiefling grimaced, "You know, I'm not really sure." At the perplexed look on the half-elf's face, she went on. "20 years ago my adoptive mother found me wandering along the ocean cliffs.  She says the only thing I could say was Belle so she assumed that was my name. I grew up with her in a small town near the swamps. When I was old enough I moved to Dreford and got an apprenticeship with an herbalist. Dreford wasn't too bad, port cities always have strange types wandering through."

Belle sighed, "But after a while it was just too much and I wanted something quieter. I took my savings, bought a wagon and went looking for some place new. I stopped in Haven for a while, but it had all of the drawbacks of Dreford with none of the benefits. I though this town would be perfect, large enough and close to the big city, with lots of travelers passing through."

Jilken picked up some ClariTea and as the other perused the shop, Belle asked, "So what bring you all to town? I hope it wasn't the Festival."

"No no," said Ell, "We're really just passing through, but we found y'all were having some trouble with these monster attacks. We've been freelancing as...problem-fixers you might say."

For a moment, Belle looked truly hurt and frustrated. In a sharp voice she said, "I don't have ANYTHING to do with those creatures."

Janora stepped up quickly and laid a hand on the tiefling's arm before looking her in the eye. "We're not asking like some of these local yokels. We truly want to help. Any information you might have would aid us in stopping the attacks."

Belle wrapped her arms around herself and worried her lower lip for a long moment. In a low soft voice she said, "I can feel something, something evil to the west. I felt it was unwise to look into it by myself and I haven't wanted to tell anyone....they don't need more incentive to hate me."

Jilken asked, "Anything else you can think of that might help us find this place?"

Belle shurgged, "You can try talking to old Gavan. He came in the other day ranting about having escaped the raiders. He had some scrapes and bruises, but he was clearing in his cups and I just assumed it was the drink talking. You should be able to find him over in the tents...probably either drunk or passed out."

Everyone did a bit more shopping, but before leaving Ell said, "If things don't settle down here, I'm sure you would be welcome down in Duskcairn. Talk to any from House Darnet. My family is always looking for inventive and inquisitive individuals for the family business."

Belle's face brighten but all she said was, "Thank you and good luck. I hope that you are able to stop whatever is causing this."

The party headed over to the tents to look for this Gavan, a dwarf according to Belle. After asking one or two people they found the grizzled old dwarf half-conscious with a bottle clutched in one hand. Asking him about the raiders, Gavan shuttered, "Oh aye, I escaped. Killed 9 of them getting out of the cave. But when I looked behind me it was the eyes of a great stone giant staring at me." He wasn't able to give them much more than that, although he said it was less than two days on foot and to the west.

Following up on the mayor's earlier suggestion, the party went to speak with the priestess at the temple. The large made of white marble with a red slate roof. A series of steps at the front lead to an open pavilion with separate shrines for several of the gods including; Eldath, IstusKandis, Milil, and Tak

Vilte, the elderly half-elf priestess of Istus, was quite welcoming, if a little odd. When Jilken asked about stone giants to the west, the old lady cackled a bit but said, "Not in my time. If I had to guess someone was talking about them old crypts in Skull Cave. I would be more than willing to perform a divination for you. For a small donation of course."

Janora snorted and walked out with Jilken following.  Ell cast Minor Illusion and made the old woman think that Istus wanted her to aid them. After trancing out she delivered the following message:

In the grasslands darkness gathers and must be slain
Find your courage and the sword made of light
Go to the place where the dead are resting in the plains
And put an end to the demon’s blight.
As she came back to herself, Ell thanked her and passed her a silver coin. He and Denye headed back out to the outside to find their friends. Heading back toward the inn Janora spots a sign on a nearby shop that read, 'Thyco's Maps and Mysteries'. Pointed it out to the others, they suggested that the shop would likely have a map to this Skull Cave.

Pushing open the door causes a small silver bell to ring and an elderly man dressed in Wayfinder garb shuffled over and introduced himself as Thyco. He did indeed have a map that included the crypt and confirmed it was about a day's ride from town. Upon learning that the party was going to deal with the raiders, he gifted them the map asking only that they come back and tell him all about it so he can record it.

With map in hand, the team decided that it would be better to check out the cave during the day so they decided to use the afternoon to get halfway there. Stopping at the Field to pick up their gear, the group also got lunch. Steaming hot ploughman's pies wrapped in waxed paper, they were half roast beef and half apple pie.

Retrieving their mounts, the party headed out the west gate following the road. Just before sundown, they found an abandoned farm. Making camp in the barn, Janora once more cast Tiny Hut and Denye put an Alarm spell on the building. Settling in night passed in relative tranquility, although there was some howling heard in the distance.
