Muspait

Description

A wide, windswept desert filled with death and mystery. A few oases exist, but most are hidden and require the knowledge of a true desert child to find. The Muspait Desert covers most of the eastern half of Umberfell. At the northeast corner lies the Welsari delta and the city of Djedbura, and to the northwest lies The Teeth and the Karzaba Peninsula. South of the desert the land becomes rocky and volcanic, while the western border is dominated by the dark mountains of The Spine.

History

Once a green and vibrant land, this was the home of the Bur'aiel empire. The first to arise in this new world of Vestra, the elves of Bur'aiel were proud of their accomplishments and looked down on all the 'lesser' races as they would often call the others.

The cities of the Bur'aiel empire were glittering gems, full of magic and wonder. In a drive for power, the mages of the day turned to binding elementals for a number of purposes. Small ice mephits providing cooling and preservations for foods, larger water sprites providing unlimited water for the cities, fire djinn who were used power factories and constructions.

For 300 years or so, the empire flourished. One day however the mages made a unforgivable error. Summoning a fire djinn for a new project, they accidently bound the daughter of the Great Caliph. That proved to be the final straw for Husam al-Balil ben Kaahai. Descending from his crystal spire, and calling forth his armies, he and his forces laid waste to the entirety of the Bur'aiel empire.

Only a few thousands souls survived this destruction by fleeing into the mountains. In the aftermath the survivors argued over what to do next. One group, now calling themselves the Bur'an_Elf, wanted to rebuild a city and to attempt to find their lives again. They argued that the past was the past and they would not make those mistakes again, but now was the time to look to the future. They moved north the delta and one of the few rivers that had survived.

The second group, now the Aiel_Elf, argued that they must live as nomads as penance for the mistakes of their ancestors. Only through embracing the desert could the people learn the lesson of their downfall. In what became known as the Breaking or Shunning (depending on if you were Bur’an or Aiel) the two camps chose to separate. Perhaps surprisingly, almost two-thirds of the survivors chose to become Aiel and swore an oath of non-violence, later called the Way of Serenity.
