Minoran Ethnicity in Vellikka | World Anvil

Minoran

"Everyone knows that feeling of being caught talking to a Minoran at a party, and listening to them explain the thought process behind each detail of their outfit. I was, understandably, concerned about visiting an entire planet of them.   It turns out the ones who go to parties are the more social ones.   The only thing more unnerving than a talkative Minoran, is a silent Minoran with a deeply thoughtful look on their face as if they are examining your soul."

Naturally Pensive

The Minorans are known within the P'Ache Solar System for being thinkers rather then people who act. They are culturally brought up to believe in thinking things through thoroughly before making a decision. There's a popular phrase in Minoran culture which translates as:
If in doubt, keep thinking.

A.K.A Peacekeepers

Minorans became known as Peacekeepers in the late 700s PT. They are still a unique ethnicity but are often grouped in with the other ethnicities from P'Ache Solar System.   Because they have been grouped together for over four millenia, a lot of the ideals and traditions have blended together. However, they still have a few elements which separate them, and these are listed below.

History

The Minorans are actually at the center of Peacekeeper history and as a result, Peacekeeper culture. For example, the current era started on the day which the original treaty was signed between the Minorans and the Primians, the year letters PT standing for Post Treaty.

Minor Unrest

The relationship between the Minorans and the Primians has been the longest running successful relationship of The Alliance. There was a small disagreement which lasted from 21 One 340 PT until 10 Three 344 PT, and was caused by the The Second Micro Rebellion. The Macrans were pushing back against the treaty they had signed with the Primians which outlawed some of their traditions.   This outraged the Minorans who sided with the Macrans and, in a previously unprecidented show of action, they pushed back against the Primians. This was known as the Minor Unrest, and while it wasn't violent, the previously smooth working relationship that the two groups had was fundementally upset.   The Primians focused on realligning with the Minorans and eventually things were back on track. They have remained on good terms for the following four thousand years.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

The Minorans of 4,000 years ago are very different to the Minorans of today, who share a lot of customs and ideals with the other people classified as Peacekeeper. However, there are still groups, some living off planet and some living on P'Ache Minor who follow some of the traditions of their ancestors. There are also variations of these tradtions which are followed by some of those living off-planet who are less strict with their practices.

Thought Pauses

Variations

  • Pauses scheduled in to the day
  • Pauses restricted to 10 minutes
  • Pauses at the beginning and end of the day
Throughout the day, a Minoran might take a pause to allow their brain to process what is going on and give them time to work through any thoughts which are rising to the surface. Traditionally these pauses can occur at any time and last between 5 minutes and an hour.

Death Words

Variations

  • Send a message with their thoughts and ruminations on the person
  • Time limited to a few hours
When a person dies, traditionally, a group of people who knew the person will sit and talk about the person who has passed. These conversations start with mentions of the words that this person spoke, or the thoughts they gave voice to which particularly resonated. Then the conversation will move on naturally to ruminations around their words or other observations of the person. Death Words can go on for anywhere between half a day and several days, depending on the content of the converation.   This is considered an opportunity to learn from the life of the person who has passed and ensure that they build on it for the future. These conversations are not always held in the same place or all at once. When someone who has lived in multiple places passes away, the Death Words might happen in each of the places they have lived with the people who knew them.

Treaty Day

Variations

  • Messages are sent to family and friends
  • Sometimes food or a gift is sent
This is a feast day which celebrates the day on which the peace treaty with the Primians was signed. Traditionally, they gather with friends and family, and they eat and talk about connections they have made throughout the year, and think about how they can continue in this positive way in the future. With this, as with all Minoran traditions, there is an opportunity to ruminate.

"Never interrupt a quiet Minoran. You never know what they might be thinking, but you're sure to find out if you ask.   Sometimes they're contemplating the meaning of life, or the chances of a coincidence in this universe. Sometimes they are thinking about what they are having for their next meal. Trust me, more often than not, it's the latter and it is almost never worth it."

Traditional Foods

Kranta

Kranta is a delicacy, created from the leaves and flowers of the Kran plant.   The plant is highly poisonous unless it is completely dried out, and supposedly tastes extremely bitter in this state. Once dried it can be salted and has a spicy heat which sets it apart.
