Josefina "Joey" Quintero
Josefina "Joey" Quintero is a member of Chimera's mentorship program, a recently turned vampire who, in order to safely reconnect with her siblings, has signed up as a mentee working for a former hunter-turned-vampire, Nico Pontevecchio.
After her reporter mother was killed in 2012 for investigating a powerful businessman's illegal activities, Josefina fled with her siblings trying to reach her aunt in America to get treatment for Olivia's seizures.
To get them across the border, Joey found someone willing to take her and her family for the small amount of money they still had, as well as other unspecified payment.
The border smuggler turned out to be a vampire who wanted payment in blood. When he drank from Joey, he accidentally infected her with the venom. Unlike some vampire traffickers, he didn't keep his passengers as permanent victims, and Joey and her siblings continued on to Los Angeles.
Once in LA, Joey discovered that the aunt she had last known was married to a powerful businessman had gotten divorced and was eking out a living in an office position.
Struggling to balance seeking citizenship, taking care of her sister, and paying hospital and prescription bills, Joey ended up making a living under the table as a bookie at an underground fight ring, where she met Shane Barrett in early 2014 while he was fighting to deal with the venom poisoning.
In 2018, Joey was walking home from a fight when she was hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light, and killed instantly.
Her family, unaware she had been infected, buried her, and after she turned and attacked one passerby, she isolated herself, afraid to hurt anyone, especially her family.
Shane, who had recommended her for Chimera's new early intervention program, managed to track her down, and helped her enroll in the fledgling mentor program instead. She was paired with former hunter Domenico "Nico" Pontevechhio, and started employment with his custodial company while working toward being safe to once again spend time with her family.
