Domenico "Nico" Pontevecchio
Domenico "Nico" Pontevecchio is a former New York City vampire hunter, turned vampire after a hunt gone bad. In an effort to reconnect with his family, he moved to LA when his son was accepted to a San Diego college, and works with the Chimera agency as a mentor, specifically for vampires who are also attempting to safely reconnect with their loved ones.
Nico was a hunter for a New York City agency known as the Sunrisers. His father had been a police officer killed off-duty in a vampire-related incident, and Nico, who had been with him in the car, witnessed the vampire himself. He was approached by the agency whose territory the attack happened in as the only living witness, and during the time spent helping them with the case, decided he wanted to become a hunter as well. He joined the Sunrisers after graduating high school, and was a hunter with them for nearly two decades.
He married his high school sweetheart two weeks after they both graduated, and the two of them had one child, Riccardo. Nico was upfront with his wife about his real job, even though honesty with non-hunters was discouraged.
He was bitten during a hunt in 2013 in which his rookie partner was killed, by a rogue vampire known only as Damien. The Sunrisers dismissed him from duty under a strict zero-tolerance policy for bite victims, with the caveat that if his sire at large was killed, he could return.
In his quest to track down and stake Damien on his own, Nico became reckless. After a brutal questioning of one of his old informants, the man turned on Nico and killed him. His family chose to bury him, as Nico had no Lay to Rest order on file (the Sunrisers did not offer one to employees).
After his turn, Nico attempted to control his feedings and reconnect with his family, but his son, horrified at what his father had become, cut off any contact between them. Nico spent several months on the streets, trying to singlehandedly detox himself from human blood and switch to Synth-blood, and also to avoid any of his former co-workers, as the Sunrisers' policy was to kill any former members who had turned on sight. His former hunter background gave him a better chance than most vampires to manage the transition on his own.
After a disastrous run-in with a former friend now hunting him down, Nico knew he needed to leave New York. Ricky had just been accepted to an oceanography program in San Diego, and Nico had formerly had some contact with Maira Lawson of the Chimera agency. He moved to LA, applied to join Maira's fledgling mentoring program, and opened a janitorial service company to both fulfill the requirement that mentors be steadily employed and also to offer a night-shift job to any vampires seeking legal employment.
Since 2014, Nico has built the company into a profitable enterprise, with over three dozen vampire employees, and has mentored two fledglings who self-surrendered to the agency, fearing they were now a danger to their families. His current mentee is Joey Quintero, whose single-minded determination to protect her siblings was her motivation to enroll in the mentorship.

Nico is always chewing gum, usually a tropical fruit flavor. He got into the habit after he was bitten, when he had consistent aches in his teeth, and continued doing it as a vampire to stave off the instinct to bite.

Nico is a devout Catholic who, even after his turn, wears his silver Saint Marcellus medal and despite his inability to enter a church, continues to pray and believes that his un-life was given to him for a reason. His involvement in the mentorship program is his way of trying to find the purpose he was given another life for.
