Planes Physical / Metaphysical Law in Vallonde | World Anvil

Planes

The Logicmasters have been fervently researching planar theory, and trying to puzzle the fundamental formations of the universe. There is evidence to support the existence of other planes in ancient scrolls, anthropological study, and in testable phenomena. Cross-planar travel has yet to be attained, though some Logicmasters say that their capabilities are fast approaching it. Logicmasters have learned the Eldritch names of the Material Plane and the Elemental Planes, and Eldritch phraseology used for teleportation spells references the planes of Feywild and Shadowfell. Still, much about planar theory remains speculation and hypothesis. The information here treats the most up-to-date hypotheses as fact, explaining the planes and their relations to each other as the Logicmasters understand them in the modern age.

The 3 Realities

Modern theory postulates that 3 realities exist in congruence with each other upon the scales of time. These realities are layered upon each other, with the power of Logic on one end of the axis, and the power of Abstract on the other. The Material Reality is the reality of Logic, where the power of Logic is strongest. The Abstract Reality is the reality of Abstract, where the power of Abstract is strongest. Between these two realities is the Twilight Reality, a place where Logic and Abstract share in equal power. This is a chaotic place, where the physical and metaphysical play equal roles, and although the rules are always changing, they do exist.

The Material Reality

Material reality is the most complex, and most structured, as would be expected from a reality built upon the power of Logic. Within this reality, Aether is bound by the power of Logic into material forms, and the power of Logic dictates how that matter behaves. This basis of physical, material law allows the Material Reality to have a natural, ordered progression. Within this reality is Celestial Space, the Material Planes, and the Aethereal Realm.

Celestial Space

Celestia, often called Celestial Space or the Realm of Celestia (as Dichotists would call it), is a cold, empty place. It is space in which all celestial objects reside, and through which the material planes float. It is a vacuum, where no organic thing can survive. The realm of Celestia can be observed from Vallonde by looking up at the sky. The sun, moons, and stars all reside within Celestia. The nature of these celestial objects, how they behave, and what they truly are is still largely a mystery, and no known being of Vallonde has gone into Celestial Space and returned. All we know of it is learned through observation, and a limited number of experiments. Astronomy is a growing field of study, and new advancements in telescope and transportation technology have made Celestia a growing subject in the public eye.

Material Planes

The material planes are spherical balls of earthen substance that float through Celestia, along with other large celestial objects. Vallonde is one such material plane. It is proposed other material planes do exist. Some scientists believe they may have observed these other material planes using powerful telescopes. They make these claims by observing as the light of certain stars briefly dimmed, as though eclipsed by a smaller object. Many astronomers cite such events as proof of other material planes drifting past the star and casting their shadow upon it. Others postulate this is one of many hypotheses, and that no verifiable proof exists that these observed celestial objects are other material planes, with life and ecosystems such as those in Vallonde. The material plane of Vallonde is protected from the harshness of celestial space by a barrier of some sort. Dichotists would call this barrier the "Mortal Bulwark". Logicmasters theorize it is a barrier of glassed Aether, hence its light-blue hue when the light of the sun shines upon it, a shade very similar to that of pure Aether. Several Logicmasters have lost their lives trying to fly a Skylance high enough to learn the truth of the matter. The most successful have reached 25,000 ft. of elevation, upon which the Air Elemental powering the Skylance loses the ability to lift it any higher, despite the fact that it should still have enough energy to do so.

The Aethereal Realm

The energy of Aether permeates all matter, as it is the fundamental building block of matter. Our senses are limited, and we are unable to perceive the Aether that surrounds us. This is due to the power of Logic, which imprisons the Aether into its material forms, and only allows us to perceive the world in the material ways our sensory organs allow us. This limited perception of reality that Logic forces upon us is referred to as the Aethereal Envelope. It is the rational, quantized way that the world is presented to our senses. The most powerful Logicmaster Mentats, accomplished in accessing and wielding the power of Abstract, have managed to peel away the Aethereal Envelope, removing their awareness from physical constraint. Upon doing so, they enter the Aethereal Realm, achieving a state called Aetherealness. While in this state of Aetherealness, they can perceive the pure energies of Aether in all things surrounding them, and are able to move their body and mind freely through this energy, uninhibited by the envelope of Logic. It is a dangerous thing, to unravel your body and mind into Aetherealness, for without the structure of the body, consciousness tends to disperse, and you may find yourself unable to summon the power to return to the material realm.

The Twilight Reality

The Twilight Reality stands at the precipice between the Material and Abstract Realities. Whereas the Material Reality is ruled by the power of Logic, and the Abstract Reality is ruled by the power of Abstract, the Twilight Reality is ruled by both Logic and Abstract. The two planes within this reality are called the Feywild, and the Shadowfell. The features and properties of these planes are unknown. The very knowledge of their existence is only known through their presence within the Eldritch language. Some Elven folklore exists in which Elves and certain magical beasts of the world originate from the Feywild, a place of supposed magic and natural splendor. Beyond this folklore, no verifiable proof exists of the Feywild, and no knowledge at all exists regarding the Shadowfell.

The Abstract Reality

Abstract reality is among the most unknown realities, though there is some experiential, anecdotal basis to argue for its existence. One logical argument for its existence states that if a reality of Logic, and a reality of Twilight exist, then a reality of Abstract must exist as well. A new theory has taken planar scientists by storm, which believes that consciousness exists in both Material Reality and Abstract Reality simultaneously. In this theory, it is postulated that when our minds conceptualize, visualize, or dream, we utilize the plane of Abstract Reality as the foil for our thoughts. Anything we visualize or think through in our minds eye is drawn into existence within the Abstract Reality, and disappears once we lose focus upon it. Even more radical theories hypothesize that your entire consciousness is built within Abstract Reality, like a house, and that our brains merely communicate with our true self, which lives within Abstract Reality. Such theories have begged the question, does our mind exist in Abstract Reality and lend itself to our bodies in Material Reality, or does our mind exist in Material Reality, and lend itself to Abstract Reality?
