Starleaf
Found in abundance among the dense foliage of old forests, such as the Forest of Serenity and the Forest of Reflection, Starleaf is a fern-like plant whose leaves contain natural antiseptic properties.
Due to these properties, use of the plant has long been a staple of natural Elf medicine, especially that practiced by rangers on patrol, who may be many days of travel from the nearest settlement.
Basic Information
Anatomy
So named for its physical appearance, a single Starleaf plant consists of five pointed leaves emanating from a central stem, resulting in the so-called 'star' formation. The leaves are typically a bright, vibrant green, in contrast to the darker green of the plant's stem.
Genetics and Reproduction
Starleaf does not reproduce through seeds, but instead through the production and spread of spores, which go through a series of reproductive phases before an adult plant is produced. Such spores are produced in large quantities, and spread throughout the area, carried on the wind. Not every spore will result in a 'child' plant, as they still must take root in favourable conditions. Many spores may also be consumed as a food source by local wildlife, as they are high in protein, lipids and calories.
Ecology and Habitats
Starleaf grows best on cool, moist forest floors, away from the brightest direct sunlight. It may often be found growing alongside various ferns, as the two species enjoy similar conditions for growth.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The roots of the Starleaf are fibrous, and extend roughly a foot beneath the surface, ensuring that the plant can absorb enough water and nutrients from the soil for its survival.
