Vortex Sea
The sundered seas, a testament to destruction. Endlessly draining.
The Vortex Sea is the term given to the waters that fill the space left behind and affected by the Time of Woe. It is dominated by a great whirlpool at its centre, the currents and tides permanently changed by the impact an unknown extraterrestrial object. The sea does not have well defined borders but is usually considered to stretch between the three continents of the Riven Lands - Sondrana, Geganna and the Broken Heartlands as well as the waters over Drowned Sond and encompassing Thousand Isles.
Ecosystem
In contrast to its geography, the Vortex Sea has relatively normal organic life within its waters. Intelligent aquatic life almost entirely avoids the exclusion zone and mundane sea creatures are at least partially kept away by the increasingly large serious of nets constructed by the scavengers that live in and around Flotsam. In close proximity to the vortex itself, rumours of dark, twisted creatures abound, though no direct proof has yet been produced.
Localized Phenomena
The vortex at the centre of the sea constantly draws in a prodigious volume of water. It disappears beneath the seabed and, unbeknownst to most, the flow arcs through and around the ring-shaped mass of Urvén to come crashing down as a tumultuous, frozen deluge on the opposite side.
History
On the 20th of Seeds, 214AA, an unknown void-corrupted object arrived from space and impacted into the centre of Great Sond. The resulting destruction smashed the continent into pieces - three main landmasses and many smaller islands. The shock sent massive tidal waves around Urvén and debris into the sky, darkening the lands for years. This was known as the Time of Woe.
In more modern times, an industry has leapt up in the surroundings: the town of Flotsam is built adjacent to the largest section of the extensive netting being slowly extended around the vortex in order to salvage lost cargo and catch fish.
