Flotsam

Nautical salvagers. Cutthroat traders. Hints of Void corruption.

Constructed on and around one of the larger islands in the centre of the Vortex Sea, Flotsam is home to hardy, seafaring folk that make a living fishing and catching the ocean salvage that drifts towards the nearby whirlpool. The town is famous for its large network of nets, much of which are made out of kelpline, harvested from the waters.

Demographics

Flotsam has a rough mix of many different species, races and backgrounds. Adventurous people from Khiji, Geganna and Sondrana mingle with underseas races such as Tritons and the Gillyfolk. The town has two main groups of people - the workers, who sail, climb and swim around the great netting to collect salvage, and traders, who sail beyond Flotsam to sell the salvage and bring back necessary goods.

One thing is common though: working in and around flotsam is not work for the faint of heart. There are few salvagers who live to retirement age, instead preferring to earn enough money for their own trading vessel.

Government

There is no official government body in Flotsam. The town does not fall within the jurisdiction of any nation state and due to its relative isolation, has resisted any attempts to change this. Instead, the town is governed by its wealthy trading elite. In recent times, a faction of poor salvagers has begun rising to prominence, fighting for a better share of the profits for the risks that they take.

Industry & Trade

Flotsam survives off the back of one primary industry: the collection of any and all material as it drifts with the currents towards the Great Vortex. This includes fish, wreckage, rescued people and even more esoteric items. Such items are collected from the great span of netting that encircles the vortex and are sorted and appraised before being shipped off to trading ports around the Riven Lands.

Salvage guilds work their own claims around the netting and the value of these licenses can fluctuate dramatically based on recent finds. These guilds usually have pre-arranged contracts with traders but these deals can become particularly cutthroat when valuable items are discovered.
