Glory Gate, the Folly of the Finnies

The city of Meddle is one of many lost dreams of greatness. It has changed hands many times, been through several types of governments, but also falters before reaching greatness. Most would point to the rampant corruption since there is actually a tale of the gods Eldarr and Scienna arguing there over the corruption of the courts.   Some three centuries ago, an elven family came to power there. The only elf ever to run Meddle. The Finnies were a boisterous lot. Like those before and after them, they saw the need for a wall around the city. Several walls stood unfinished, some joining and awkwardly displaying how unlike one another they were. The Finnies choose to start a new wall, but this one would work with nature.   Several stunning trees were in the east and they choose to build the walls to shelter those trees within the perimeter. The walls sloped and curved, circling the chosen tree and snaking like a vine across the ground. The walls were etched with leaf patterns, hiding the seams of stone under decorations. Flying buttresses on the inside were covered in decorations of flora and animals. An elaborate gatehouse was planned in the middle of the section. The walls and decorations assembled, the doors and gates, but only part of the roof. The design had proved difficult to accomplish. A stretch of 300 feet was built, which was elaborate and quite stunning in their day. All built to work with nature.   But coffers ran dry after two years of drought. The Finnies suffered a death as the patriarch died during Festival falling down the stairs of the grand ballroom before hundreds of guests. He was very drunk, and a very happy drunk. He was dancing when he swung too close to the stairs and lost balance. The Finnies were Anti-Resurrectionists. And with that death, opposition to the Finnies rose quickly and they were soon voted out of power.   Not another bricked was laid at the gatehouse. But the Finnies' desire to fit in with nature was accomplished. The area around the wall grew even more in the centuries that followed. A small pond opened up on each side of the water. The foundations struck a small spring of water and the grounds are more fertile than ever. Vines crawled up all the walls, embracing every carving. New tree grew too close to the walls, causing buckling to ripple up from the ground. Even the partial roof survived, probably because no vines grew so high as to reach the high vaulted ceiling. It is visited more by druids and those wanting to enjoy nature. It lies just north of the western road out of the city. A dense copse of trees and growth with stone walls and structures poking out the top.
