Des'Alom

Perhaps the greatest center of learning inUr'En, Des'Alom is a large city located in the Golden Sands desert. It is known for its many universities and the Great Library of Des'Alom While it's sister-city of Wes'Alom is the center of naval trade, most land-based trade runs through Des'Alom, brought from the east by Kalari caravans.

Demographics

Des'Alom is mostly comprised of Al'Quam Radashi who are native to the region. The city has a very sizable minority of Kalari who have begun to settle here in greater and greater numbers. A great many of the residents are scholars in different fields as well as those who are here to learn from them. Both are primarily the rich and affluent of their societies.

Government

The city is run by a Governer, who is appointed by the ruler of the Al'Badadi Empire. At this time, it is Empress Shimi'Badadi. The governor is advised by a council, which is mostly made up of representatives of the major universities as well as the curator of the Great Library of Des'Alom.

Defences

The desert is the city's main form of defense. Any would-be invaders have to suffer through weeks of desert heat, sandstorms, and a lack of food or water. They would be seen long before they would reach the city as the sands to little to hide one's presence, enough to prepare a solid defense of the city. Should those fail, the city has walls, soldiers as well as a few powerful spellcasters who reside in the city.

Industry & Trade

The city's primary commodity is knowledge. Students eager to learn come from across the continent, often undertaking perilous journeys to learn from some of the greatest minds in all of Ur'En. Much of the city serves this large body of diverse students and scholars. Since little is able to be grown outside the oasis, food must be imported from beyond.

History

The city was founded by the legendary Tuk'Badad as he conquered his way across the Telentia River Plains. The legend goes that, after traveling through the Golden Sands  for many weeks, his army was thirsty, downtrodden, and close to desertion. One night, in desperation he prayed to Elodar to save his army. The day, they discovered a freshwater oasis. In the God's honor, he proclaimed he would establish a city at this site, and dedicate it to their ideals.

Geography

The Diamond in the Rough is built on a natural oasis at the boarder of Lake Sadin. This means this otherwise impossible settlement has easy access to fresh water and that surrounding farmland can irrigate.
