Outcasts

Unwanted and unloved

There are three main groups of outcasts in United Britannia and Hibernia.

Nihil (pl. Nullis)

Nullis are those born to a witch family who does not possess magic. Although Nullis are still considered a part of their witch family, they are often treated subpar. If a child is determined at their Arbitrium to not possess magic, the parents have the choice between giving their child up for adoption in a human agency (the choice chosen by most witch families) or are raised in their family. Nullis are given the most menial of jobs; that is, jobs that could be completed by magic but are considered unworthy (e.g., cleaning, serving, caretaking, etc.).   A person might also be considered a Nihil if they do not pass their Exams and choose not to go live with humans.

Innaturalis (pl. Innaturales)

An Innaturalis is a witch with unnatural powers; that is, those that possess Dark Magic, some Time Magic and some Transportation Magic. Dark witches are executed immediately, while those with Time or Transportation Magic are monitored until their Exams; if they are too powerful, they are institutionalized, and if not, they are released from surveillance (supposedly).   For many witches with Time or Transportation Magic, they are able to temper their power by the time they are tested as a teenager. In Vesper Cross's case, who possesses strong Dark Magic, he escaped at his Arbitrium only because of an inexperienced Sensitive and as a teenager by skill.

Prisoners

Witches that have been imprisoned are viewed negatively. Although prison's purpose is supposedly rehabilitation, former prisoners are often perceived poorly and have a difficult time finding employment.
