Education
In United Britannia and Hibernia, all children are required to be homeschooled until the age of ten. During this time, parents either hire a tutor or teach their children themselves the basics (math, reading, writing, etc.). Parents may also choose to help their children with their magic, but that is not expected or required.
The Academy, located in Ilyrium, schools children from the ages of ten to fourteen. During their time at the Academy (called Grades 1 through 4), children learn magical basics, called Foundational Magic.
Exams are held after the children graduate the Academy. Exams are expected to be passed before the students go on to the Institute, and students typically take them between the summer of their Academy graduation and the start of the Institute. When they pass their Exams, the witch earns a Level Seven. A very small amount of students are unable to pass their Exams after their first try; if that is the case, they are granted two more attempts. If they are still unsuccessful, students must decide between living life as a Nihil or go live with humans.
After passing their Exams, students begin at the Institute, From about ages 14-16, students work to find their specialties and hone them. Most students can (and probably do) have more than one specialty. After two years, students continue to the Athenaeum to complete their Apprenticeship.
Witches can progress from Levels Seven to One (although Levels One and Two are virtually unheard of) by rigorous testing by the Magisterium. Some professions do require certain Levels, although Levels are typically just a source of pride for families now.
The Athenaeum is a stage in a witch's education in which they complete their Apprenticeship in addition to continued education. An Athenaeum education is very tailor-made; every student's experience will be different. Some students spend more time in the field with their mentor, while others will spend more time in the classroom. Everyone is required to attend and graduate from the Athenaeum.
