The Northwest Territory

The Northwest Territory is a legally recognized section of the Unified America Project (UAP) made up of five states and two partial states in the Northwest region widely understood to be out of reach of the UAP government. The territory includes the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and large sections of Washington state and Oregon. Due in large part to New California’s inability to control uprisings in the Pacific Northwest and the UAP’s disinterest in the region, militias and separatist groups began springing up in the 2040’s. This area of the country has had a reputation for antigovernment sentiment since before the Texas Revolution, but groups that could amass enough weapons and power to hold borders and prevent federal intervention didn’t begin to appear in earnest until Scorpius Bond in 2042. The citizens of the NT were broadly in support of the ideals of The Independent Nation of Texas, and these states likely would have joined the Revolution movement, if there had been enough people living in them at the time. A fairly large percentage of local militia members, and even the farmers and ranchers in the area who were part of the sovereign citizen movement, went to fight for Texas when the war began. Those who didn’t die were considered traitors, and the vote to join the UAP was taken while their homes were vacated and they were listed as “dead or desertion,” anyway. When they returned, many were angry, but they also saw what was happening in Texas, and were willing to avoid the more serious consequences of being openly at war with the UAP, so they accepted what was essentially no more than an occupation for the first few years. Now, the local militias have a much tighter hold on the NT, and do their best to keep the region as close to the “old ways” as possible. Identification is checked at borders, airports are closely watched, drones are shot down, and UAP officials are unable to make diplomatic trips into the area without permission and an escort. The majority of UAP citizens are unaware that the NT exists, though they hear rumors. The Omega prefers the appearance of a larger nation, and projecting as much strength as possible, rather than to admit there are multiple areas of the country they were unable to hold.
