Kaalkuslanders (kal-kus-LAND-ers)
Long separated from the mainland, their ancestors sought to forge their own destiny away from any kings or foreign powers. As the Verstümmelt Imperium swept down the Golden Peninsula the Kaalkuslanders left Mogelijkheid behind and their culture slowly diverged from the Rijkkustlanders. Their sense of independence grew, and almost the whole island has a unified front against foreign intervention and a deep sense of suspicion towards outsiders. Though part of the Golden Peninsula region, their lands were never conquered by the Verstümmelt Imperium and so the culture is almost alien to the rest of the region.
They are known for their fearlessness and self-reliance, prefering to live in small familial groups as opposed to in bustling cities or towns. The mountains and rivers of their homeland make trade and travel over land risky even on a good day, and so most simply stay on their homestead or travel along the coast using homemade canoes or long, shallow vessels. Their territorial and xenophobic natures has also bred a society of cultural raiding, with many sailing into the Bloedstraat to plunder merchant ships, or even raid the less developed areas of the Îles des Serres.
