Hertog
A Hertog (pl. Hertoggan or Hertoggen) is one of the major lords of the Kingdom of Herske. The Hertoggan currently control the five Duchy around Lystehvit, which is controlled directly by the royal family. Once, these lords controlled seven such duchies, when Azendale was part of the kingdom but those lords broke free with their land in the year 298 AC.
The Hertoggen have broad license over their duchies with the only requirement by the King a certain level of income from the territory and the providence of men and arms. These lords are often allowed to rule by bloodline, with something of a dynastic cycle appearing in the Hertoggain houses, but the King has stepped in at several points over the course of the kingdom to replace a Hertog or mediate succession disputes.
