Calindine

Demographics

The inhabitants of Calindine are divided into four classes of which three are rough designations rather than exact strata.

The highest class is the governmental class, vastly composed of lords, with some educated advisors and strategists among their rank. The Azenlorten who run the state come from outside amter rather than having been denizens of the city previously, and run it and Caledun as Council and national property.

The next class is the emerging company class, those who own companies with which the government contracts. They are deeply subservient to the whims of the Azenlorten, but exert some influence over contraction by cultivating relationships with different lords for preferential treatment. The company class is generally in greater contact with the Ontermen than the government, as they make up the majority of employment options in the city.

The third class is the skilled labourers, or Fabarcheit, who make up a fairly small minority of the populace and an even smaller minority of the employers. The Ontermen have something of an ongoing rivalry with the Fabarcheit due to their relative prosperity and have taken to vandalism at increasing frequency over the past few years, with the Fabarcheit beginning to retaliate significantly after a two-ish year lag. The Fabarcheit have a separate district with somewhat spacious dwellings, and are considered something of a representative of Dendera, leading to the settlement of the Temple of Dendera in the Fabriksward. The theological class is close in wealth to the Fabarcheit, but has greater influence on the Ontermen, with less ill perception.

The Ontermen, the underclass, make up a majority of the population in Calindine, acting as a sort of landless vassal to the Azendelian state directly rather than to a specific lord with amt-specific privileges and protections. The majority of the Ontermen labour at factories or mines in Caledun, though there are those who work in service such as orderlies for the [Asclepius house of healing]. The Ontermen tend to live in cramped quarters, with the relatively wealthiest living in the Clearmile, the name now a cruel joke, and the poorest living in the outskirts of the lower city, outside the walls.

Government

The government of Calindine carries on as a separate lordship under the direct control of The Council of Ash, specifically the Subcouncil of the Capital. The Council of Ash has tended to treat Calindine as something closer to a national asset than a regular city, imposing larger taxes and tariffs on those living in Calindine, clearing quarters to station military at times, and encouraging the development of factory work and mining to replace traditional economic means in and around the city.

There is a strict curfew in Calindine of 2 hours past sunset, with the exceptions of the Branfeiring and Nachtwehr holidays, as the lion's share of the festivities occur at night. The curfew is enforced by the Conciliar Reserves, who report directly to the Council of Ash.

Outside of the enforcement of curfew, the Conciliar Reserves police the upper portion of the city, with orders to keep peace. The guardsmen are known to be instrumental in putting down protests which have occasionally broken out throughout the history of Calindine, not large enough to act as a cordon, instead used as an instrument of decapitation to movements. The containment of protests has traditionally been handled by the Calidane Guard, a much larger force of CMGs contracted to the Council, with only minor intervention by the Council. These Guards are the bulk of the patrol in the upper city and make up the patrol of the lower city entirely, outside of the 'neighborly watches' formed district-by-district of those living therein who desire to help keep their communities safe during gaps in Calidane Guard patrols.

Infrastructure

The city has a complex system of elevators which are both inside and outside the city walls, used to ferry labourers, goods and resources between upper and lower cities, with the primary control of these elevators residing in the upper city. The cargo elevators tend to fall outside the walls due to spatial constraints of the lower city, and the main personnel elevator banks at the centres of both the Grimhorn and Clearmile districts. Many of the factories are situated along the wall of the city that they might take the delivery of resources directly rather than carting them across the city.

There is a network of trolleys in the upper city which ensure that the walking time between any two destinations is no more than 10 minutes, with trolleys arriving at stops generally on the 8 minute mark. The lower city also has a trolley network but it has a steeper cost and much slower run times, closer to 27 minutes on average between trolleys, and less relative coverage than the Upper City Trolley.

Districts

Upper CIty

The Upper City contains four districts, excepting the castle and Envoy's Row, which are best described as separate from the city itself. Clearmile: the district of the Ontermen, Fabriksward: the district of the Fabarcheit, Grimhorn: a mix of Fabarcheit, Ontermen and the lower company class, and Castellan: the district of the upper company class and the government class, which houses many of the retired Conciliar Reserve.

The Clearmile district is choked with smog, with small dwellings and cramped streets, and has the largest population in Upper City Calindine. The majority of the occupants of Clearmile struggle to afford the district but view it as a status symbol which places them above those who remain in the lower city. Often the second or third children of Fabarcheit, the Ontermen here hold the most resentment toward the Fabarcheit class, and the touching of the districts foments significant criminality along the border. Clearmile tends to also have the strongest Guard presence in the Upper City and standoffs are not uncommon.

The Fabriksward is the district of the Fabarcheit, the skilled labour class. Near to but shielded from the factory banks along the edge of the city, the homes of the Fabriksward tend to be spacious as they double as a working
