Daphne Character in Turien | World Anvil

Daphne

Daphne is a Dryad and Source Tree for the Fairy Chad. As there are no records of a Dryad being a Fairy's Source Tree before, she is known to be unusual. It doesn't help that she has to sleep for five years every five years in order to make sure she and Chad both live. During these deep sleeps, she pulls in the magic of Turien from the ground through her roots and passes it through her flowers and fruits for Chad to consume. As a Dryad, they get intimate frequently.
She is also the mother of Nada, a Half-Fairy-Dryad currently studying in a Human high school in order to join the Inter-racial Research Team. Although she has been with Chad for many years, she did not allow a child between them until now. Seeing how powerful Nada is as well as having to miss half of her formative years, Daphne does not think she will give birth to another child after Nada. She is expecting a garden of grandchildren though.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

The bright purple of Daphne's hair colour (and flower colour) stands out among her generation of Dryads. There are not many of her type of tree that grow, and the ones that do exist, live on the outer edges of the Great Forest. They are much older then Daphne and the ones younger than her are a mix of family roots, as seen by their differing flower types. Once, Aunt May spoke of a family root of Dryads with the brightness of Daphne that lived around the Badlands, but no one has been living there for many, many Cycles.
Daphne's wood is a subdued red. She has dark bark with lighter wood inside. Her leaves are a dark green, but she doesn't like to wear them often as they grow when she deep sleeps.

Special abilities

Daphne has vivid dreams when she deep sleeps. She has only told Chad and Aunt May about them, as she knows no one can help her or understand them. She knows they are to do with the magic that courses through Turien and keeps it alive. She feels the colour of each racial magic rush through her roots as she deep sleeps. She feels the battle within her as the Dryad and Fairy magic push the other racial colours out. She feels the throbbing pain as the Fairy magic suffocates her. And the calm releif as the Dryad magic gently expands the capacity of her own magic affinity and lifespan. Every time, the Fairy and Dryad magics clash within her. And every time, they find a collaborative dance that benefits her and Chad in the end. She wishes the cycle didn't have to repeat each time, that the magic could start in the collaboration the last deep sleep ended in. But it never does.
Along with the sensing of the magic that each Source Tree must obtain to deliver to their Fairies, Daphne is shown dreams. She is unsure whether they are memories of the magic of Turien, visions of other live in Turien past, present or yet to come, or simply vivid dreams. She simply tells Chad what she felt and saw, what she remembers each time.

Mental characteristics

Mental Trauma

Daphne has been linked with Chad Eyles since their birth. They didn't start sexual relations until an appropriate age, but they were always physically close. Her being so different to others, and him having a severe lack of communication skills only led to the two becoming closer to each other and more ostricised from their family groups and races. Daphne does not habe a bad relationship with the Dryads she grew around, but her circle is small and she does struggle with all the time she misses in order to deep sleep.
During the years of Daphne's deep sleep, Chad often travels the land of Turien and will tell Daphne of his newest children when she awakens. They fight every time, but it is more often due to Chad not asking about her dreams first, rather than the fact htat he went and partnered with the various women of Turien. Other times it is because Daphne gets jealous of the other mothers being able to live with their children throughout their lives. Thus, Daphne loves to hear about all the children, and creates a pressed flower book of all of Chad's kids she keeps in a chamber next to her heart, but will not actively see the children. She counts them as her own, but knows that most of them will never even know who she is.
Missing out on watching Nada grow up, and seeing her so reserved due to only having Chad raise her, has only solidified the determination for Daphne to not birth any more children she cannot be responsible for, as well as grow the jealousy she has towards other mothers.
