Yagyū Munefuyu

Zanshin Samurai

Sword Scion Yagyū Munefuyu (a.k.a. 柳生 宗冬)

Summary

A fiery woman who would be the current head of the Yagyū Clan, if it had not dissolved with the death of Yagyū Munetoshi. As it is, Yagyū Munefuyu is on a Warrior's Pilgrimage (Musha Shugyō) with her younger sister, Yagyū Jūbei. Though learned in military tactics and warfare, she never had the knack for leadership or charisma possessed by her sibling, and so Munefuyu remains satisfied with merely following in Jūbei's path, lending her aid however she can. Recently, the two fell into the service of Tachibana Muneshige, whose honorable ways Jūbei was utterly enamored with. Munefuyu herself felt more affinity with Tachibana Ginchiyo, Daimyō of the Tachibana Clan, but either way had no complaint with lending the two her blade for a time.   In her youth, Munefuyu originally showed little aptitude for swordsmanship, and severely lagged behind her siblings. Upon reaching adulthood, she left the tutelage of her grandfather for a time, giving up Yagyū Shinkage-ryū to instead meditate in a remote temple and study the art of "vigilance", or Zanshin. After several years of intense focus, she found her perceptions altered, able to see the world in a new way. Though she still is not skilled at her family's signature brand of swordplay, she has developed her own style of fighting that incorporates this skill.   Though she is a powerful fighter and has a commanding presence, Munefuyu considers her lack of initiative to be her worst flaw. She has trouble taking command, and always feels more comfortable when someone else is giving the orders. This makes her a natural match for powerful individuals used to command, whom she is unconsciously drawn to. Her personality can be described as rough and straightforward, but she is nevertheless always careful to act in a way befitting her family name, even as little as it might mean in the present day.
