Summary
Elder and Chieftan of the Baharnans that occupy the Isle of Oriab in the Dreamlands. Chieftain, in this case, is an archaic term which harkens back to the Baharnans’ tribal origins. Veasna might more accurately be called president and trade leader of Baharna. All, however, know him as a powerful man with connections who can effect change in the Dreamlands. His duties include settling disputes, overseeing trade, and delegating responsibilities for the protection and smooth functioning of the port city to those under his command. Though he is elderly now and rarely leaves his home overlooking the city, Veasna is still known for his sharp mind and skill with numbers. It’s said that he has met with generations upon generations of Dreamers in his clay walls, and has picked up something of the mysticism that surrounds them. Baharna now operates largely on its own without his direct input, but influential residents still seek him out to ask his counsel on matters both fiscal and spiritual. It is Veasna’s greatest regret that he has not been able to fully protect his people from the Black Galleons that prowl the waters around Oriab. Despite his best efforts, fishing crews and trading vessels bound for Celephaïs are still captured by the black ships’ cruel slavers and sold for rubies at Dylath Leen to the north. Even his own daughter, Sothy, has been so claimed, and only recently rescued by the valiant Hashinara Clan. Were he a younger man, Veasna might wage a war all his own on the Black Galleons and the port of Dylath-Leen that offers them shelter. As it is, he can only rely on the help of allies within the Dreamers to see that his daughter and their people return home safely. In this pursuit, he has made Baharna as welcoming as he can to those from Celephaïs and their friends. Many influential Dreamers, including Howard Phillips Lovecraft himself, often take extended stays in the coastal city and offer aged Veasna their expertise.
