Dolores

Dolores is the Celestial of sorrow. She is one of the ten Emotional Celestials and survived the Celestial War despite the death of her counterpart.
Many people have told me I do not understand their sorrow. Perhaps they are right. I understand my own. I do not always know how to manage it. Sometimes I understand others' grief. I do not know how to manage it.
— Dolores

History

Dolores is a first generation Celestial, coming into being under mysterious circumstances at least two thousand years before the Celestial War. She was one of the ten Celestials with emotional powers. Her counterpart, Terico, was the Celestial of sadness. From the very beginning, the two were always seen together, never far from each other's side. The exact nature of their relationship is uncertain, but many believe they were romantically involved.
Dolores and Terico often attended events with other Celestials and socialized with many different people. The two got along well with Ella and Zeke, the Celestials of uncertainty and confusion. Much of their time with Celestials was spent with the other Emotionals or first generations. At some point, Dolores met Tomas, the Celestial of thieves, and the two became good friends. Dolores was able to help Tomas understand and accept his grief and he offered her a

new perspective on sorrow and how it varied from person to person, rarely experienced the same way by two people. Dolores was also on good terms with both Nicole and Felicia.   Dolores and Terico, although not quite grouped in with the Dark Celestials, sided with the Commander for the Celestial War. This put them at odds with four other Emotional Celestials, their friends Ella and Zeke as well as Natasha and Jordan. As no complete narration of the Celestial War can be found, the circumstances of Terico's death are unknown. Only the fact of his death is known and written.
"Dolores, stop it! Stop, please! We're going to destroy each other! This isn't what Terico would want!"
"I don't care what he would have wanted! What do you know? You've just moved on! You don't care about Jordan, much less Terico!"
— Natasha and Dolores
Terico's loss destroyed Dolores. An old myth titled After Grief details a meeting she had with Natasha in which it is obvious that Dolores is unable to move on. The myth describes her devastation and how she took it out on Natasha, as well as how Nicole was able to get through to her. Stories that occur chronologically after that are mostly focused on her relationship with Tomas, who became her lifeline and closest friend following her counterpart's death.
Dolores is a solitary Celestial who prefers her own company to that of both mortals and other Eternals. Her only interactions with Celestials following the Celestial War are with Tomas, Nicole, Felicia, and Aliend. She slips through the background of myths and legends, a shadowy figure that appears in times of grief and distress, but never stays in one place for long. According to a letter between Nicole and Aliend, her personality now is drastically different from what it was before the war and Terico's death.

Magic & Powers

Dolores is one of the few Celestials with the power to both change emotions and feel them empathically. While she is able to use other magic, especially spells and teleportation, her true power is seen in her ability to warp someone's feelings into those of sadness, sorrow, grief, desolation, and despair. This power can affect even other Celestials, as evidenced by the spiral of despair Dolores was able to send Natasha into in After Grief. Dolores can also use a variety of other mental magics, such as minor telepathy and slight illusions. Her kinetic magic is low, but she is able to create weapons with her aura.   As a Dark Celestial, some believe she is capable of blood magic, but she has never used it in a legend and her ability to remains pure speculation. Even her status as a Dark Celestial is questionable, since she has always been one of the more sympathetic Celestials.

Appearance & Renderings

Dolores is described as a short woman with fair skin and dark gray hair. She wears plain, almost drab clothing, usually old dresses. Her eyes are a dark slate gray as deep as wells. It has been said they were once warm with kindness and sympathy, but they now appear heavy and cold. Dolores has very light freckles scattered over her face and arms. Her hair is cut to her shoulders and styled close to her neck where it curls up to her collar. Her shoulders curve down and she walks slowly, each step close together.   Depictions of Dolores can be found all across the galaxy. She is often shown alone, occasionally with either Terico or Tomas. One piece, displayed in a museum on Zenricho, features Dolores sitting by a fire with Natasha. This painting was clearly inspired by After Grief. A particularly moving image of Dolores of uncertain origin depicts the Celestial staring down at something on the ground, her face painted with horror. The background of this artwork is vague and undefined, yet some scholars believe it is an imagining of Dolores finding Terico's body.
She recognized that woman from the night before. The gray-gowned one with the sad eyes who always faltered first. Whether it was because she was weaker, less attached to the Blackrot, or stronger mentally, Hailey didn't know. But she was always the first.

Author's Notes

Dolores shares a name with my deceased grandmother. I chose it for this character because it means sorrow and I wanted to write her into the story in some way.

Poor Dolores. :( She needs a hug.   'She slips through the background of myths and legends' I really love this line.
