Darina (dah-REEN-uh)

Darina is one of the mysterious Celestials of legend. She is the Celestial of deception and appears in a few of the oldest Celestial stories as a skilled and influential liar.
She's the Celestial of deception! How could you actually trust her?
— Hailey, Dragon's Blaze

History

Darina is a first-generation Celestial who first appears in the stories about Love, Celosia, and the Commander. In those first stories, she appears as a background character. Other Celestials refer to her as a skilled manipulator who loves power and enjoys using people to get what she wants. The first time she appears in the flesh is at the wedding of Celosia and the Commander, where she attempts to stop the two from being joined.
"Look what you've done, girl."
"Me? You told me I couldn't trust him! This is not my fault!"
— Darina and the girl
Darina then makes a short appearance in a lost story about the Celestial of lies where she convinces the girl he loves that he cannot be trusted. Her actions lead to his death, but Darina blames the girl and kills her mercilessly for it.
Chronologically, Darina next appears in a strange story during which she kidnaps a young Rohana, the daughter of the Commander and Celosia. She holds the girl hostage for several hours and uses Rohana to attempt to kill Celosia. Her plots are foiled, and the other Celestials banish her from their company. Darina then swears revenge on Rohana and her parents and disappears. This particular story is often debated in academic circles and some do not believe it ever happened.
When the Celestial War occurs, Darina sides with the Commander and the other dark Celestials. This somewhat contradicts the previous story of the Commander hating and distrusting her after she kidnaps his daughter. Darina kills mostly mortal combatants during the war, but she supposedly duels Naida before the other woman confronts the Commander.   After the Celestial War, Darina almost disappears from stories. She is occasionally mentioned in myths across the galaxy, often the driving figure behind deadly wars or the manipulator of figurehead kings. Wherever she appears, myths about her warn people not to trust her no matter how convincing she is or how trustworthy she seems.

Despite the number of stories that warn against trusting the Celestial of deception, something about her very nature draws others in, making her seem kind and understanding, and so the stories continue as person after person is duped into giving away things they should have kept close.

Magic & Powers

Like all Celestials, Darina has the ability to use and channel different types of magic. Her own powers, which reflect an aspect of existence, deal with deception and manipulation. Because of this, Darina is far more persuasive and convincing than others and her mind control is incredibly strong. Her magic appears dark green or black when used in aura-channeling spells, but her most powerful magic is done without being seen.   A single story from poor planet claims that Darina has channeled a mysterious black substance and used it as power. The story described her eyes turning completely black when she did so, a manifestation associated with pure evil.

Appearance & Renderings

Darina is described as a physically beautiful woman of average height with black hair and dark green eyes. Her hair is about shoulder-length and is often either left down or pulled into intricate braids and other hairdos. She is generally dressed in black or dark green and her outfits are usually luxurious and expensive. Her skin is a light brown, supposedly flawless, and her features are described as sharp and perfectly symmetrical.   Darina is not painted or rendered often, likely because of her low popularity. She has been drawn a few times before her betrayals, but many of those depictions have been lost or destroyed. According to legend, the Tales of the Celestials had a full-page illustration of her in a forest with the Celestial of lies, but no copies of that book can be found anymore. Only two renderings of Darina are still in existence: one located in a museum on Jaque and the other privately owned by a royal family in the far reaches of the Janya galaxy.
I didn't know what I was doing! Her power was too strong. It's not just her words, it's her magic. She's not just convincing, she's controlling.

Author's Notes

This is a character who actually appears in the main story, so I had to be very careful what I said. I also realized halfway through the Appearance & Renderings section that I had a drawing of her and didn't need the description, but I left it in for spacing.
