Toveken

"And when the night was darkest and the wolfs of Fenrir howled around the village, the Asen finally send a ray of light to the scared folk. And on the top of the hill, a figure stood, watching silently.
When the wolves became aware of this presence, their howling stopped abruptly. The whole world held its breath - and in this silence, the figure raised the staff in his hands."

Eriksen looked around the hearth into the faces of the children, eagerly listening to his tale. They all knew what was coming. Even Lonne, the smallest child, that had been cowering in fear of the wolves until now started to smile. Just like Eriksen now did. This was everybody's favorite part of the tale, how it always went.

"The Toveken had arrived, to save the people."
Before the night of Wotan's Call, before the first Chauken settled in the lands between Weser and Ems, there were the ancient people, the great Druids of old, the stuff of legends told around the hearth.
These stories tell of the druids of the Toveken, the magical people gifted by the Asen with magical skills to match their own godly power.   But they also tell of times, when corrupted men wanted to use magic for malicious purposes. It was then when the Druids were responsible to seal away all magic until it eventually returned in the events of Wotan's Call.
Many ruins covered with ancient runes still stand witness to the culture these druids lived in. Their legacy is the trade of the runesmiths, who learned of the magical runes from the ruins left by the druids.

History

Many generations ago, the Toveken were all that was good and powerful in the world. Each druid understood the secrets of the nature around them and conversed with the Asen on the deep nature of the world. They founded many flourishing settlements all across the lands between Weser and Ems and discovered how to wield the words of the Asen as their own magic.

After generations of great deeds and peace across the clans, a new threat arrived from the south. The first expeditions of the Isanmannen encountered the Toveken and the protectors of the Germanen sought to repel these aggressors from their lands.
Unfortunately, all mortals are fallible and the Toveken druids were never an exception. A few of them, in their originally noble quest to find ways to protect everybody from the southern soldiers, searched for wells of power that should have been left alone.
Eventually, these corrupted druids listened to the malicious whispers of the giants to open up wells of darkness. They became even more dangerous than the Isanmannen leading the Toveken to fear they were about to turn the whole world into darkness. The wisest druids of the Toveken saw no other choice but to seal off the magic for everybody before the evil forces could completely cross into the world of Mannen.

The magic was gone, the Mannen were again, simple Mannen, so were the Toveken themselves. Still, they were wise men and continued to wander the lands, spreading their wisdom and keeping the peace. Though one by one, they went away, as all mortals do and their numbers declined. In a harsh world were survival is not gained by too much contemplating and more action, wise men became superfluous and rare.
