Mirelights Tradition / Ritual in Tovedorp | World Anvil

Mirelights

The Mirelights of the Tismorster Mire are a way for the inhabitants of Tismorst to find a safe route towards their settlement in the middle of the mire. However, these lights are not to be taken as sure guides through the mire, as many of them will lead the uninitiated into dangerous and sometimes deadly terrain.

History

Putting up way stones or torches to lead through dangerous terrain is a common concept in the Chaukenlande. However, the Tismorster clan is very wary of outsiders and always hid the markers for most people.

After the night of Wotan's Call, they began to put up everlasting torches to mark the path. However, many of these torches will lead deep into the Mire, luring the wanderer on dangerous terrain, often noticing it only when it is too late.

Over time, several torches have fallen down or being knocked over by people into the mire itself. While the original torch was quickly replaced, the other torch was lost into the mire, while still glowing with its eternal flame. Adding more dangerous and misleading lights to the mire, that randomly surface in the murky waters.

Execution

It is unknown, how the Tismorster prepare their torches so they can burn with a small flame forever. Almost certainly there are Runes involved. It is unclear, if the rod made out of a giant bone is necessary for that spell or just a clear sign for everybody to stay away.

Rumor has it that the people of Tismorst and their very few trusted friends all have an item with a corresponding rune on them. When touching it, the torches change color and the correct way will light up for you.

Components and tools

Each Mirelight, no matter if it is a real or a fake one, looks like an ominous torch. The shaft is made from a big, straight bone from an unknown creature and is about 1.5 meters tall. It is adorned with smaller bones hanging down on threads and usually, moss is creeping up the shaft in an oddly spiral-shaped way.

On top of the Bone sits a transparent globe with a net-like texture. It vaguely reminds the viewer of a fish egg, but with the size of a toddler's head. Within this globe, a small flame is endlessly flickering in a wind that cannot ever reach it. The flames do not spend any warmth, touching the globe, in fact, feels very cold.
