Hevren

Hevren is one of the Moon Rulers, who champions the course of free fate. He is the God of Water, except the sea, which is Nefferlasta’s domain. Instead, he is part of the misted lakes, the running rivers, the trickling streams, the tumbling waterfalls, and of course, the choking marshland. It is said that he is present in every droplet, every rush of water. And just like water is never present in the same form at the same time, Hevren can see all times and none. Within every moment he can see refracted futures stretched forward and behind, and the toll it takes on him is immense.   From his earliest times of existence, Hevren has remained in Solitude, tended only by his closest servants who are immortal or extremely long-lived, as they make the fewest ripples in the waters of time.   Hevren does not have time for what is good, or what is evil. Instead, he cares for the Balance, much as his closest allies, Triodar and Vektiss. He protects the wild places, or the oldest of cities, whose roots have grown deep indeed. His beloved people are the elves, and other long-lived races, and he has often shared the insights from his prophecies with the long-lived races to protect them from catastrophes that might otherwise have destroyed them.   He rarely speaks, and rarely communicates, but his servants and fey attendants are highly active in the world. They each see fragments of his purpose, and act to fulfil his wishes. He is a selfless God to an extent, for he wishes to see the world survive, and he can see so many paths where it is doomed to destruction. It has made him a sorrowful God, quiet and contemplative, refusing to take company with many others, and burdened with the knowledge of things to come. When he dreams, it is said some of his Sight drifts through the waters of time and across Torthe, and gives mortal kind the gift of prophecy, foresight, and other powers.   A follower of Hevren can be good or evil but is always expected to obey a servant of Hevren when one appears. Individual followers may disagree, but the choices and aims furthered on behalf of Hevren are without a doubt going to ensure the long-term survival of the world of Torthe – even if sometimes the results are horrific for innocents and evil souls alike.   Hevren, despite being burdened with the powerful prophecies of the future, and often taking cold decisions that could doom many to death, for “the greater balance”, is known as a kind God. The deaths he grants, like those who drown, brings peace and calm at the end of all things. He despises unnecessary suffering, as it does not exist in nature, and even those who earn his immortal hatred will be given gentle release from life.   The Fey Servants of Hevren   The fey servants of Hevren are many, for he can rarely stir himself from his slumbers and his torments to take an active role in the world. Instead, he sends through his fey servants the orders to those who will follow them most closely. For some, they will follow the darkest of his servants, for others, those that are more light-hearted. But there is a follower of Hevren for everyone, for all sides need to be considered if the coming destruction of the world is to be halted.   Athraxia, Queen of Black Desire   Athraxia is a strange fey follower of Hevren. She cares little for mortals, and when she is not carrying the will of Hevren, she exists in the Feywild, in her wild glade. She is beautiful, one of the more beautiful servants of Hevren, but she is also capricious and cruel. Her black eyes flicker, and each time she sees a mortal she considers the various pathways that it might take. If it satisfies her that they can bring no risk to the Balance, she lets them go free. That, however, is extremely rare. Others, she will devour, or the very rarest of mortals she may offer a Pact. Her own followers are wild, baying beasts, cavorting in her glades in strange sacrifices and rituals, and most can barely talk they are turned into such a frenzy. She represents the wild loss of control that comes with prophecy, and the rage that mortal kind would feel at the loss of control over their own future. Those who take her as their Pact, would tend to have black eyes, and people would feel strangely out of control with anger or hunger when warlocks of that Pact would draw near.   Bellarius, the Merciful Ghast   This twisted gargoyle creature exists amongst the graveyards, picking through the broken bones and decaying remnants of mortal lives. It is he who explores the future through entrails, through bone-casting, through the runes, and when he talks it sounds like the cracking of dry twigs. He is quiet, almost unmoving, and it is said he is most like his master of all the fey servants. His role is to watch the prophecies of the dead, and to bring peace to the enemies of Hevren. He is gentle, welcoming and despite being utterly terrifying in appearance, is known to welcome all who arrive in his domain, to his table. Alas, his loneliness can seize the very soul from people who feel even a hint of pity, and most who visit him die. It is a sad, bitter irony that his closest followers are those who despise him, because anyone who feels sorrow or pity towards him cannot survive long with him. Those who have no care for him tend to serve him for the power they gain, and little else. Those who forge a Pact with him tend to develop sharper nails, and a more pallid, corpse-like complexion.   Tertrych, the Master of Cobwebs   Tertrych has served Hevren since the beginning, and is ancient indeed. He exists in the antechamber to Hevren’s own domain, and rarely, if ever now, takes followers or Pacts. He is the favoured of Hevren’s servants, and when he does stir himself, it is for the gravest of prophecies. Very little is known of the way he operates, but what is known is that he is extremely honourable, acting unmoveable as the stone and ages of time themselves. Those who follow him tend to develop wispy grey hairs, that on closer examination appear to be cobwebs.   Karian, The Horned Wanderer   Karian is Hevren’s stranger servant, who lives both within civilisation and apart from it. In the earliest times where he served Hevren, he lived solely within the wilderness, but increasingly became attracted to the wildness within the cities. He exists within the rushing waters, always laughing and seeing the amusement within prophecies. His is an easy service, most of the time, one that can bring great rewards of hedonism and enjoyment. As such he is often looked down upon by the other servants of Hevren. However, due to his wandering nature, and his lack of arrogance, and his willingness to welcome all who would serve him, he tends to gather more knowledge and information of mortal kind than most other servants of Hevren. It is said that Karian does not care for his servants, more than wish to collect them, almost as if they are objects of art, but for some the difference is negligible. Once someone is his, his protection is real, although he often requires sustained offerings and small services as part of any Pact he creates. Those who form a Pact with him might begin to echo his vividly coloured tattoos, waking up one day to find markings all over them.   Karian is a light-hearted, flightly follower of Hevren, but those who have spited him can see the side of him that is full of terror, as befitting a one-time lover of Athraxia.   Herrikus, The Flicker in the Smoke   Herrikus is rarely seen, and even more rarely heard. He is a beautiful fey creature, but one that often refuses to take a corporeal form. He exists within the mist over swamps, or in campfires or mystical smoke. His prophecies and secrets come from the last whispers of dying mortals, or from hushed tones on cold winter nights, or from fear filled ghost stories as the night turns dark indeed. Yet he is always there to bring comfort and peace, and is possibly the kindest of Hevren’s servants, and more than any other, seeks to protect and nurture mortals on Torthe. He has, once or twice, rebelled against Hevren’s wishes and resisted one or two prophecies that might have harmed those he cares about. Those who form a Pact with him might show flickers of fire in their eyes, or their shadows might flicker as if made of smoke.   Thingling, Seer of Fate   The Thingling is a creature of nightmare, who cannot speak, or communicate in any meaningful way, save the occasional scream or whimper of terror. This fey creature has seen more than any other of Hevren’s followers and tore their own eyes out. But the duty of prophecy is not so easily dodged, and now on their clawed hands, the eyes still stand, looking terrified out at the shadows. The Thingling was once a beloved bride of Hevren, and now hides amongst the empty places of the world, choking back sobs of fear. Only when the world is closest to destruction does any semblance of sanity return to it, for of more worry than the fear that brought it to terror, is the reality of it happening. Messages of any sort are rare from The Thingling, as are Pacts with it. When Pacts are made, it is a sign that a great cataclysm is near, and even a whisper that a Pact with The Thingling has been made is enough to set nations to chaos. Those that make a Pact with it often develop strange circles between their index fingers and thumbs, as well as a strange red shape beneath both of their eyes, looking like dripping blood.
