"The original from
Vecna... was a book with a cover made from flesh from a human face and bones from a demon. The latter was made into the book's metal binding via magic. It had—at least for normal people—unintelligible symbols on the cover.
The book could be edited by the owner and the owners of a book did so without regard to uniformity of the material or the look of the book. Therefore, the books looked ugly, they had pages made from different materials, and they had different writing styles. A major reason why these books were so hard to read and navigate through was its non-uniformity. Therefore, it took a long time to read through the book." -

Keepers of the Book
After defeating Vecna, they became keepers of the book. Unfortunately, at some point between 24 AL and 145 AL, they had lost control of it.

The sister in law of King Amias Lavandin, archmage of
The Acropolis Consortium of Magi, and the granddaughter of the lich Adam (see: Wake the Dead NPCs), the book fell into her hands in 145 AL after it was stolen for her by Jox Van Vermeer. The book was then stolen by
Quid the Reveler and taken to the
Yggdra tree where Vecna was imprisoned.

Quid the Reveler stole the book from Countess Olympia Mallinger and was going to use it to raise Vecna, similarly to Orenoi. She was defeated by the party in
The Foe of Many Faces Returns and taken into custody.
Aletheia de'Lombardi
See: The Foe of Many Faces Returns NPCs
After the party in the Foe of Many Faces Returns defeated the almost-Vecna-raisers, the book was given to Aletheia, wife of
Otto de'Lombardi, to be taken to a safe place in
Little City where neither Feywild nor Material Plane politics could put it into jeopardy.
